Blue Devils, Panthers split twinbill

LANSFORD - A pair of struggling high school softball teams met Saturday in a non-league doubleheader.

Shenandoah Valley and Panther Valley left a little better than they arrived as each notched its first win of the season by splitting the twinbill.

Estephany Hierro and Kristen Florio each went 2-for-5 with a double as Shenandoah Valley took the first game 13-11.

Daniela Maturana struck out nine and Jessica Bauder went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs in the loss for the Panthers.

In Game 2, Brandi Beers and Maturana combined to strike out 10 as Panther Valley beat the Blue Devils 9-8 to split the doubleheader. Cassidy Ryan scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.

Hierro went 3-for-4 for Shenandoah Valley in the nightcap.

Freedom 7 Tri-Valley 6

BETHLEHEM - Taryn Wilson and Wendy Header each drove home two runs for Tri-Valley, but Bethlehem Freedom tied the game with a seventh-inning run and won the game on a passed ball in the eighth inning.

Wilson hit a two-run double in the fifth and Header's single came in the sixth inning as the Dawgs scored three runs in each frame to erase a 5-0 deficit.

However, an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh tied the game for Freedom and the hosts scored the game-winner after two hits and a groundout in the eighth.

Jordyn Ebersole had two hits for Tri-Valley.

Emmaus 1 Pottsville 0

EMMAUS - Morgan Alisauckas and Courtney Dusel picked up the Tide's only hits as Pottsville lost to Emmaus in a non-league game.

Pottsville's Sara Tobin gave up the game's only run on an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Mifflinburg 6 North Schuylkill 0

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - Nadya Spotts and Rachel Gricoski each hit doubles, but North Schuylkill was shut out by Mifflinburg in non-league action.

The Wildcats hit two home runs.

College Softball PSU-Brandywine sweeps PSU-Schuylkill

MEDIA - Paige Vandermeer struck out six but allowed 12 hits over 5.2 innings for PSU-Schuylkill as the local Lions lost to PSU-Brandywine 10-2 in the first game of a Penn State University Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Tabby Dusel picked up two RBIs and Vandermeer and Kait Boyer each went 2-for-4, but PSU-Schuylkill lost 12-7 in Game 2.

H.S. Track Crimson Tide win team title

MOUNT CARMEL - Led by four individual championships, Pottsville's boys' track team captured the team championship of the recent Gerald Breslin Invitational meet at the Silver Bowl.

Pottsville compiled 89 points to edge Mount Carmel and Southern Columbia by 14 points each. The Crimson Tide got titles from Kevin Hampford in the 400-meter dash, Humza Hnesh in the 800, A.J. Stevens in the triple jump and Patrick McDonald in the pole vault.

With 65 points, Pottsville's girls placed second to team champion Selinsgrove's 112. Pottsville gained two wins by Sarah Lombel in addition to victories by Paige Stoner in the 1,600 and by the 3,200 relay team.

In the boys' rankings, Blue Mountain finished fourth and North Schuylkill took 10th. Among the girls, Blue Mountain placed fifth and North Schuylkill finished 10th.

Dickey wins event at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG - Blue Mountain's Tristan Dickey scored the area's lone event victory in the 88th Annual Jack Roddick Shippensburg High School Invitational meet.

Competing in Class AAA, Dickey won the boys' 400-meter dash with a time of 50.25 seconds. He also anchored Blue Mountain's 1,600 relay team that placed fifth in 3:29.56. Teammate Colton Cryts placed fifth in the pole vault (13-6) and eighth in the long jump (21-3.75).

Jim Thorpe was paced by Deonte St. Hill, who placed fifth in the triple jump (44-1.5).

In Class AA girls, Upper Dauphin's Colleen Troutman was fifth in the 100 (12.87), sixth in the 200 (26.98) and helped her school's 1,600 relay to eighth place (4:26.31). Upper Dauphin also was sixth in the 3,200 relay (11:03.72).

North Schuylkill was led by Carter Green, who was third in discus (134-0) and sixth in shot put (34-9). Teammate Carly Gregas was third in high jump (5-0).

In Class AAA girls, Blue Mountain's Carissa Lorimer was fourth in discus (114-2) and fifth in javelin (120-6). Teammate Maddy Riegel was sixth in javelin (119-0).

Jim Thorpe's Brooke Cope placed third in javelin (124-10). Teammate Devon Matz took seventh in the 300-meter hurdles (47.43).
