College Track Former Tamaqua star wins javelin title
ROME, Ga. - Former Tamaqua Area High School all-state performer Allison Updike, now a sophomore at Azusa Pacific University, threw the javelin 152-1¼ (46.36 meters) Friday to break the meet record at the National Christian College Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Updike's winning throw easily topped Jen Stucyznski's 2005 meet record throw of 146-4½, as she earned NCCAA All-America honors.
Oklahoma Christian sisters Miranda and Kathryn Ostlund finished a distant second and third, respectively, with throws of 133-½ and 129-0 Friday.
Updike's effort helped Azusa Pacific to a second-place finish in the NCCAA team standings. Shorter University swept both the women's and men's titles.
Updike, who already owns the Azusa Pacific school record after throwing 163-7 in early April, will participate in the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on May 22-24 in Allendale, Michigan. She owns the second-longest throw in NCAA Division II this season, trailing only Bethany Drake (169-6) of Western Washington.
