UDA nears crown

COCOLAMUS - One more win and Upper Dauphin will be the Tri-Valley League baseball champions.

Sophomore Aaron Cleveland pounded three hits and drove home five runs as the Trojans dismantled East Juniata 25-3 in four innings Saturday.

Upper Dauphin can clinch the league championship with a victory over Lancaster Country Day on Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Kyle Glouner scattered four hits and was backed by a 24-hit assault that included four hits and three RBIs by Mac Ney, four hits by Kaleb Hoch and three hits by Peyton Barge. Glouner added two hits and three RBIs.

Upper Dauphin built a 14-1 lead through three innings, then scored 11 runs in the fourth inning.

Bailey Coder and Mason Hambright each tripled for East Juniata.

Tamaqua 7 NW Lehigh 2

TAMAQUA - The Blue Raiders scored six runs in the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit en route to a non-league victory over the Tigers.

Bo Rottet and Adam Bates each had two hits for Tamaqua, which bunched six of its 10 hits in the fourth inning. Nate MacDonald hit a two-run single and Zach Coleman added an RBI double.

Winning pitcher Russell Blaker allowed five hits, including two doubles, in a complete-game effort.

Panther Valley 8 Holy Cross 7

LANSFORD - A ground ball hit by Panther Valley's Jake Szczecina scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Holy Cross catcher Josh Mies misplayed the throw home.

Jake Kusko singled in the tying run the previous at-bat after Mies hit an inside-the-park home run in the top of the eighth inning.

Szczecina and Kusko both finished with two hits.

Mies added a double to his home run while John Borgia recorded two hits - one a triple - for the Crusaders.

H.S. Softball Marian 7 Schuylkill Haven 3

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Lindsay Nemeth had two hits, while Bryianna Pearson knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning to lift the Fillies to a Schuylkill League Division II-III crossover victory over the Hurricanes.

One of Nemeth's hits was a RBI triple in the third inning. Pearson's single gave Marian a 4-3 lead, while Kaitlin Kowker added a two-run single in the seventh to put the game away.

A pair of home runs accounted for Schuylkill Haven's runs. Elizabeth Bayliff hit a solo shot in the second inning and Emma Schweigert slugged a two-run blast in the third inning to tie the game at 3.

NW Lehigh 2 Tamaqua 0

TAMAQUA - Northwestern Lehigh cashed in Tamaqua errors in the third and seventh innings to score the only runs the Tigers needed to defeat the Blue Raiders in a non-league game.

Claire O'Dea led Northwestern Lehigh with a double and a single.

Shayna Dietrich had two singles for Tamaqua.

H.S. Track and Field Hawks' Heistand grabs 2 golds at Firing Meet

SHILLINGTON - Karlie Heistand won the girls' 800 and 1,600 to lead Hamburg during the BCIAA Championship Meet/Firing Meet at Governor Mifflin High School.

Heistand's most impressive showing came in the 1,600 were she ran past the field, winning the event in 5:08.32, as Twin Valley's Meghan Horan (5:16.60) took second. Heistand finished with a 2:18.94 in the 800 to beat Muhlenburg's Emily Heere (2:19.47).

Kali Hepner had three top-eight finishes for the Hawks, with her best showing coming in the pole vault as she reached 10-0 to take third. Schuylkill Valley's Bre Manzolillo (11-6) won the event.

Hepner was also fourth in triple jump at 33-6.75 and tied for seventh in long jump with Conrad Weiser's Gwyn Price at 15-8.

Hamburg's Nikkole James (32-5.5) was also seventh in shot put.

On the boys' side, the Hawks' Matt Moyer was a runner-up in the pole vault at 12-0, with Governor Mifflin's Josh Rowe winning at 12-6.

Cody Miller also had three top-eight finishes, placing fifth in both the discus (138-3) and javelin (164-3). Miller was also sixth in the shot put (46-1.25).

The District 3 Track and Field Championships are next Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
