Hamburg athletes qualify for states Lions pair earn PSUAC honors Weber, S. Florida in regional final

SHIPPENSBURG - Hamburg seniors Karlie Heistand and Kali Hepner qualified for next weekend's PIAA Championships by finishing in the top five and meeting the state qualifying standard in their events during the second day of the District 3 Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium.

Heistand took fourth in the Class AAA girls' 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:09.05, well under the qualifying standard of 5:13.37. Penn Manor's Greta Lindsley won the race in 4:56.26.

Hepner took fifth in the Class AAA girls' pole vault at 11 feet to match the state qualifying standard. Lebanon's Erin Winters (12-0) was first.

Heistand qualified for states for the fourth time, while Hepner will be making her second appearance.

In Class AA girls, Upper Dauphin's Anna Osman (49.9) took sixth in the 300 hurdles, while teammate Colleen Troutman (13.17) placed sixth in the 100-meter dash.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Two members of the Penn State Schuylkill softball team have been named to the All-Penn State University Athletic Conference team.

Junior Jena Leffler, a Pine Grove graduate, was named to the second team after batting .333 with 19 runs and leading the PSUAC in stolen bases with 16.

Freshman Tabby Dusel, a Pottsville High grad, received honorable mention after pacing the Lady Lions in batting with a .360 average. She had 14 RBIs and scored 11 times. The catcher, she also threw out seven baserunners while making one error.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Tri-Valley graduate Juli Weber and her University of South Florida softball team experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows Saturday at the NCAA Division I Softball Tallahassee Regional.

In a winners' bracket game early in the day, host Florida State outlasted the Bulls 2-0 in 11 innings.

Weber went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt. In the 10th, USF had a runner on third base with nobody out but didn't score. With one out in that inning, Weber received an intentional walk.

Later, in an elimination game, the Bulls scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 3-2 victory over South Carolina. Weber went 0-for-3.

South Florida (43-16) advances to today's regional final and must defeat Florida State (52-6) twice to advance. Game time is noon, and ESPN2 will televise the game live.
