PINE GROVE - Austin Fick scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort as Pine Grove downed Valley View 4-2 in Game 1 of their Schuylkill-Berks Legion League North Division playoff series Saturday at Stump Stadium.
The defending North champion Grovers only mustered four hits, by Steve Zimmerman, Nick Cataldo, Jared McCabe and Ryan Wolfe, but took advantage of six walks and three errors to score three runs in the second to grab an early lead.
Jarred Matter led Valley View, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is at 3 p.m. today at Valley View.
Schuylkill Valley 5 Pottsville 0
Tom Gallagher pitched a four-hit shutout and Bobby Grigas had three hits to lead Schuylkill Valley to a victory over Pottsville in a Schuylkill-Berks Legion League Northern divisional playoff game.
Schuylkill Valley, which scored in four of seven innings at the plate, added two hits and an RBI by Alek Hummel and a double by Jake Damiter.
Pottsville, which was hurt by seven errors, gained one hit each by Eric Wapinsky, Dan Doyle, Mike Kuperavage and Andy Belding.
Game 2 of the series is today at 5 p.m. at Schuylkill Valley.
Hamburg 11 Wyomissing 9
WYOMISSING - Ryan Atkinson went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored to help Hamburg beat Wyomissing in Game 1 of a Schuylkill-Berks Legion League South divisional series.
Nick Kuhn finished 3-for-4 and Joey Cominsky went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Reds. Brandon Fry, Jake Lenkiewicz and Austin Bashore all had multi-hit games for Hamburg.
Scott Kuczala and Jonathon King each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Wyomissing.
