Upper Dauphin surprises Division III champ

ELIZABETHVILLE — Defending Schuylkill League Division III champion Halifax opened its league schedule Tuesday night with a loss on the road.

Laura Sweger paced Upper Dauphin with eight blocks, eight kills and 12 service points as the Trojans edged the Wildcats 9-25, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 16-14 in both teams’ Division III opener.

Madissen Miller added 15 points, while Colleen Kolva tallied 14 for the Trojans.

“Halifax has been the team to beat the last several years and it was a big mental as well as physical hump to get over. My girls played hard and just refused to quit,” Upper Dauphin coach Terry Bowser said.

Autumn Capouillez recorded seven aces, 25 assists, one block and seven digs for Halifax, which had begun its season by reaching the quarterfinals Saturday of the Bulldog Harvest Tournament at Big Spring. Amber Laudenslager collected 11 kills, three aces and six digs and Paige Miller registered 22 digs and five kills for Halifax in Tuesday’s match.

Tri-Valley 3

Williams Valley 1

HEGINS — Maddie Deibert posted 11 kills and four aces as Tri-Valley opened its Division III schedule with a 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 triumph over Williams Valley.

Jordan Ebersole added 10 aces for the Dawgs.

Maura Kreiser posted four kills to pace the Vikings. Jenna Daniel had six blocks and Bindy Boyer added 10 assists.

Williams Valley won the JV match 2-0.

Lehighton 3

Tamaqua 0

LEHIGHTON — Katie Higgins recorded six kills, three aces and four digs as the Indians rolled to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 Division I victory over the Blue Raiders.

Tori Eads-Rodriguez contributed 19 assists, eight aces and a kill, while Andrea Schafer tallied three aces and three kills for Lehighton.

Mackenzie McVicker collected three kills, two blocks and a dig, Carly Kosciolek added four service points, two kills and one dig and Alexis Baddick totaled one kill, one block, three digs and an ace for Tamaqua.

Lehighton also took the JV match 2-1.

Panther Valley 3

Lourdes 0

LANSFORD — Jamey Mikovich registered eight kills, five service points, five aces and eight digs as the Panthers defeated the Red Raiders 25-10, 25-14, 25-21 in a Division II contest.

Macey Markovich added one kill, 14 service points, seven aces and one dig, while Cassidy Ryan collected six kills, one ace and six digs.

Caity Funk led Lourdes with five kills, while Amber Kogut contributed nine service points.

Panther Valley won the JV match 2-0.

Pine Grove 3

North Schuylkill 2

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Defending Division II champion Pine Grove outlasted North Schuylkill 24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9 in a Division II match.

No individual statistics were reported.

Pine Grove won JV 2-0.

Minersville 3

Shenandoah Valley 0

MINERSVILLE — Emily Bartashus recorded five kills and four digs, Erica Nettles added five kills and six digs and Meg Schwalm piled up 25 digs to lead the Battlin’ Miners to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-13 win over the Blue Devils in a Division IV match.

For Shenandoah Valley, Mariah Sands collected six kills and three digs, Kristina Nieddu dished out 12 assists and Shatiana Sanabria had four kills, one ace and two service points.

Minersville won the JV match 2-0.

Nativity 3

Mahanoy Area 0

Jocelyn Holobetz recorded two blocks, three digs, 12 kills and one ace as the Green Wave swept the Golden Bears 25-12, 25-15, 25-15 in a Division IV match atop Lawton’s Hill.

Ashley Strausser tallied one dig, nine kills and four aces and Noelle Steele contributed 20 assists, three digs and two aces for Nativity.

Noelle Kauffman had three kills, Rylee Kane added two kills, three blocks and two digs and Mychaellah Lucas notched two aces and four service points for Mahanoy Area, which won the JV match 2-0.

Schuylkill Haven 3

WEATHERLY — Tori Pascucci collected 10 service points, two aces and 10 assists as the Hurricanes rolled to a 25-12, 25-11, 19-25, 25-19 win over the Wreckers in a Division IV match.

Madison Felty contributed 17 service points, six aces, three blocks and five kills, while Kaylee Read tallied 10 service points, two blocks and two kills for Schuylkill Haven.
