High school cross country roundup

WEATHERLY — Adam Bahrey set a course record and teammate Willie Streisel finished 1 second later as Mahanoy Area swept Marian and Weatherly on Wednesday to take command of the Schuylkill League Division II boys’ cross country race.

Bahrey ran an 18:42 on Weatherly’s 3.1-mile layout to lead the Golden Bears past the Colts 24-31 and the Wreckers 21-34.

Marian’s Aaron Srinivasan placed third in 18:55 to key the Colts’ 20-35 win over Weatherly in the other portion of the tri-meet.

With the wins, Mahanoy Area (6-2, 5-0 D-II) remained undefeated in the league heading into next Wednesday’s regular-season finale at Minersville.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Wesley Yutko finished third overall in 19:22 as Minersville edged Schuylkill Haven in a Division II dual meet.

Sam Brennan and Owen Pothering came in first and second, respectively, for the Hurricanes. Brennan won the race in 18:26, and Pothering’s time was 19:17.

The Miners’ grouping of places 3-6 helped them pull out the win.

ORWIGSBURG — Johnathan Condly won the race in 17:16 as Jim Thorpe beat Blue Mountain 20-38 and Pine Grove 15-50 in a Division I tri-meet.

The Olympians had four runners in the top five, including Dylan Bucior, Jake Saxon and Ben Saxon.

With the sweep, Jim Thorpe (10-0, 6-0 D-I) remained undefeated. The Olympians host Lehighton in next Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

Cameron Greenawalt led the Eagles with a second-place finish in 18:08 to propel Blue Mountain to a 15-47 win over the Cardinals.

Michael Elo led Pine Grove, coming in 15th overall in 21:24.

North Schuylkill sweeps Indians, Tide

LEHIGHTON — Chris McCormick led North Schuylkill with a third-place finish in 18:18 as the Spartans earned a pair of 24-31 wins over Lehighton and Pottsville in a Division I tri-meet.

Michael Blacketter (18:12) came in first place overall, leading the Indians to a 25-30 win over the Crimson Tide.

Ed Hossler led Pottsville with a second-place finish in 18:15.

TAMAQUA — Joe Nortavage, Adam Melnick, Andrew Tite and Raymond Kinder finished as the top four runners to give Tamaqua a Division I win over Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech.

Nortavage won the race in 19:30.

Jordan Heintz led the Rams with a fifth-place finish in 21:31, while Lee Pitonyak and Shawn Cool also placed in the top 10 for CMVT.

WEATHERLY — Marian’s Tina Capparell continues to break barriers.

The freshman sensation set a course record at Weatherly, running a 19:58 to help the Fillies top the Wreckers 15-50.

Megan Babinsky, Megan Bisco and Jacqui Pitts finished 2-3-4 to enable Mahanoy Area to sweep Marian 22-34 and Weatherly 15-50.

In the process, the Golden Bears (6-2, 5-0 D-II) remained atop the Division II standings. They visit Minersville next Wednesday in the regular-season’s final meet.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Autumn Pedron led a Minersville squad that swept the top five spots as the Miners beat Schuylkill Haven in a Division II dual meet.

Pedron won the race in 23:44.

Casey Renninger led the Hurricanes with a sixth-place finish in 26:35.

Blue Mountain sweeps Olympians, Cards

ORWIGSBURG — Caroline Rickard, Sarah Brooks and Kathryn Thompson finished 2-3-4 as Blue Mountain topped Jim Thorpe 20-42 and Pine Grove 15-50 in a Division I tri-meet.

Rickard’s time was 21:43, Brooks finished in 21:53, and Thompson crossed 5 seconds after that.

With the sweep, Blue Mountain (9-0, 5-0 D-I) remained undefeated. The Eagles, Pottsville and Tamaqua are all 5-0 in the division. The three teams will meet next Wednesday at Pottsville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium to decide the Division I championship.

Kayley Kovac won the race in 21:36 to give the Olympians an 18-45 win over the Cardinals.

Elisa Seip led Pine Grove with an 11th-place finish in 24:51.

Panther Valley’s Delana Nalesnik finished fifth overall in 22:01.

LEHIGHTON — Brenna Nagle finished in 22:15 to come in third overall and lead Pottsville to a 27-32 victory over Lehighton and a 25-34 victory over North Schuylkill in a Division I tri-meet.

Jennifer Beers led the Indians with a second-place finish in 21:38 to give Lehighton a 26-29 win over the Spartans.

Jess Yeneskie won the race in 21:38 for North Schuylkill.
