The 1991-92 North Schuylkill High School girls’ basketball team will be inducted into the Jerry Wolman-Northern Anthracite Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame during Sunday’s ceremonies at the Shenandoah Valley High School cafeteria.
Coached by Lafay Hope and Jerry Freiler, the Spartans went 31-2 that season, winning the PIAA Class AAA state championship with a 73-68 victory over Pittsburgh North Catholic. Members of the team included Krista Chabon, Jen Leibig, Sue Molnar, Debbie Reiner, Natalie Miller, Sharyn Puka, Gina Tophoney, Jenna Vebrosky, Jessica Bobiak, Marie McDonald, Janine Shoup, Kelly Madden, Helene McDonald and Danielle Evans.
Information provided by the Wolman-Northern Anthracite Hall of Fame committee that appeared in Monday’s newspaper was incorrect.
North Schuylkill
to hold bonfire,
rally Thursday
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — The North Schuylkill School District will be hosting a special bonfire/pep rally at 8 p.m. Thursday on the south side of the North Schuylkill Elementary School building in preparation for Friday’s football game against Mount Carmel.
Members of the Spartans football team, cheerleading squad and marching band will be on hand, and the Spartan Half-Time Club will be providing free refreshments.
The event is free and members of the community are invited to attend.
ECHL adds 7
new members
CHICAGO — The ECHL announced Tuesday that the League’s Board of Governors has approved the membership applications of the Allen (Texas) Americans, Brampton (Ontario) Beast, Missouri Mavericks, Quad City (Illinois and Iowa) Mallards, Rapid City (South Dakota) Rush, Tulsa (Oklahoma) Oilers and Wichita (Kansas) Thunder for admission to the ECHL.
The seven expansion teams will begin play in the ECHL this season, giving the league 28 teams in 20 states and one Canadian province for its 27th season of operation, which begins Friday, Oct. 17.
The applicants were approved at a special meeting of the ECHL Board of Governors in Chicago on Tuesday.
