LANSFORD — Matt Yedsena scored 15 points as Mahanoy Area gave Scott Hudson his first win as the Golden Bears’ coach following a 44-38 victory over Marian in the opening round of the Panther Valley Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening.
Mahanoy Area will face Jim Thorpe for the tournament championship tonight after Jason McElmoyle won his first game as the Olympians’ new coach with a 54-31 victory over Panther Valley in the nightcap.
Tonight’s title game is at 7:30 p.m., while Marian takes on Panther Valley in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
Mike Wronski added eight points for the Golden Bears during their win, including two 3-pointers. The Colts led 12-10 after the first quarter, but Mahanoy Area outscored Marian 34-26 the rest of the game to pull away for the win.
Mike Vercusky led the Colts with 13 points, while Nick Wesner added nine points, all on 3-pointers.
Sophomore Matt Elmore scored a game-high 17 points in Olympians’ victory, while Brendan Carroll scored eight of his 15 points in a key 14-5, third-quarter run that broke the game open. Shane Snisky added 10 points for Jim Thorpe.
Anthony Micholik paced the Panthers with 11 points.

Haven, Trojans meet for Upper Dauphin title
ELIZABETHVILLE — Zavier Webb and Danny Blugis each scored 11 points to lead Schuylkill Haven to a 46-22 victory over Covenant Christian in the opening round of the Upper Dauphin Tip-Off Tournament.
The Hurricanes will face Upper Dauphin in tonight’s 8 p.m. championship game after the Trojans downed Mt. Calvary Christian 67-23 in the other first-round game.
J.T. Hughes added 10 more points for Schuylkill Haven, which rode a 21-6 second period to pick up the win.
Matthew Miller scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half to pace Upper Dauphin.
Travis Deitrich and Dakotah Wiest each added nine points for the Trojans, who held the Chargers to just two points in the second half.
