O’Donnell leads
all-star squad
HOMETOWN — Marian senior setter Abby O’Donnell was named the Player of the Year on the District 11 Class A girls’ volleyball all-star team, released Tuesday.
O’Donnell helped Marian to the District 11 Class A championship and led the Fillies to the PIAA Class A championship match, which Marian lost to Greensburg Central Catholic.
She was joined on the district all-star squad’s first team by three teammates — senior right-side hitter Emily Pilla, junior middle hitter Abby Stankiewitch and junior outside hitter Maureen Kloap.
Nativity’s junior outside hitter, Jocelyn Holobetz, and junior liberto Carley Lionetto, were also named to the first team along with Minersville junior libero Meg Schwalm. Salem Christian senior hitter Morgan Barnes rounded out the first team.
The second team consisted of Marian’s Lauren Nietz, Nativity’s Ashley Strausser and Noelle Steele, Tri-Valley’s Alexis Artz, Mahanoy Area’s Noel Kaufman and Mychaellah Lucas and Salem Christian’s Kaitlyn Aston and Jenna Krage.
Sprint show
gains sponsor
FORESTVILLE — Big Diamond Speedway has obtained a sponsor for its appearance by the Renegade Sprints next season.
B&H Landscaping, Pottsville, will sponsor the Renegade Rampage 30, a 30-lap feature for the touring 410 sprint series that will present $5,000 to the feature winner of the Sunday, June 14, race.
The series marks the first appearance for the division at Big Diamond since Sam Hafertepe Jr. won the feature at the track in the 2013 season. The Renegade Sprints will be the only appearance by the 410 sprints next season at the Forestville oval.
The tour will be led by former Knoxville Nationals winner Tim Shaffer and two other drivers — Greg Wilson and Chad Kemenah — who have won All-Star Circuit of Champions championships in their careers. A group of Pennsylvania drivers are expected to appear to challenge the touring group.
Big Diamond officials said the 2015 schedule may be released next week.
