ELIZABETHVILLE — Those fans wanting to see Millersburg and Upper Dauphin in the WQLV Holiday Tournament boys’ championship game will have to wait another day.
Monday’s game between the Tri-Valley League rivals was postponed at 7:09 of the first quarter after an electrical outage knocked out power to the Upper Dauphin High School gymnasium. The Indians were leading 2-0 when the game was stopped.
The contest will resume at the point it was stopped today at 7 p.m. Admission to the game will be free, but seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis and may be cut off if the gymnasium fills up.
According to the PPL website, a power outage occurred Monday that affected 2,244 customers in Washington Twp., including parts of Elizabethville. No reason was given for the outage.
The first three games during the final day of the two-day tournament were played Monday, including the girls’ final, with Williams Valley beating Tri-Valley 51-39. That game ended around 7:20 p.m.
The boys’ championship game tipped-off around 7:49 p.m. and lasted 51 seconds.
After a long scramble for the opening tip was controlled by Millersburg (6-4), Christian Keiter scored on a move inside at 7:29. After Matt Miller missed a 3-pointer during the first possession by Upper Dauphin (7-2), Keiter was fouled on a putback attempt on the Indians’ next trip down the floor. He was about to head to the foul line before the power went out around 7:52 p.m.
At first, the lights on the west side of gym, along with the scoreboard on the east side, remained on. After a 3-minute wait, all the power went except for the emergency lights and the teams were sent to the locker room.
The original plan was to wait until 8:30 to see if the lights would come back. But with an estimated restoration time of 11 p.m., the game was postponed at 8:16.
The title game will be the second of three regular-season meetings between the two schools. Upper Dauphin won the first game 92-52 in Elizabethville on Dec. 8, ending the game on a 40-0 run that broke a 52-all tie.
The two will also meet in a Tri-Valley League contest Jan. 6 in Millersburg.
