HS WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Haven places 3rd at ELCO Duals

MYERSTOWN — After an 0-4 start, Schuylkill Haven has turned its wrestling season around.

The Hurricanes went 4-1 Tuesday to claim third place at the ELCO Duals. Schuylkill Haven topped Daniel Boone 50-28, Lebanon 65-15, East Pennsboro 47-28 and York Tech 65-15. Susquehannock downed the Hurricanes 44-27.

With the victories, Schuylkill Haven (6-5) has won 6-of-7.

Austin Engle (120), Preston Gehring (132), Ben Hower (220) and Max Motko (285) had 5-0 days to lead the Hurricanes.

Hower (11-4) and Motko (12-5) notched five falls apiece to provide bonus points. Gehring (12-2) added three pins and two technical falls. Engle (12-4) contributed two falls, two decisions and one forfeit victory.

In addition, Cedrick Fessler (113), Trevyn Fessler (152) and Nate Batz (160) posted 4-1 records for the Hurricanes.

Mt. Carmel’s Panko

earns silver medal

TUNKHANNOCK — Mount Carmel’s Blake Panko’s having a strong senior season on the gridiron and wrestling mats.

The Red Tornadoes senior rushed for 919 yards and 17 touchdowns during the fall.

That success has carried over to the winter. Panko finished second at 160 pounds at the Tunkhannock Kiwanis Wrestling Tournament.

After two falls and a 5-3 decision over Andrew Tompkins of Cranford, New Jersey, Panko dropped a 5-2 decision to Justin Haley of Wyalusing. A Bloomsburg tournament champion earlier this season, Panko is 9-1.

Gabe Bogutskie (182) and Allen Yancoskie (195) placed third for the Red Tornadoes.

Other placewinners for Mount Carmel included Shane Gudonis, sixth at 113; Lane Tanney, eighth at 120; and Mitchell Fletcher, sixth at 170.

Mahanoy Area had two placewinners. Nolan Fegley took seventh at 170, and Corbin White placed eighth at 182.

Wyalusing won the team title with 241 points, well ahead of runner-up Cranford, New Jersey (197.5). Mount Carmel finished ninth and Mahanoy Area 22nd in the 26-team field.

Pine Grove places 2

at Governor Mifflin

SHILLINGTON — Danny Diaz-Walton (132) finished fifth and Alec Soltys (182) took eighth for Pine Grove at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

The Cardinals finished tied for 19th place with Wyomissing in the 22-team field. Southern Regional, New Jersey, won the team title, followed by Governor Mifflin and Upper Darby.

Panthers place 8

at Damascus tourney

DAMASCUS, Md. — Led by Rian Shubeck’s second-place finish, Panther Valley had eight medalists at the Damascus Holiday Tournament.

Also for the Panthers, Tanner Kennedy and Ali Capobianco took thirds; Hunter Kennedy, Dylan Moyer and Zach Glassic earned fourths; Mike Lazar finished fifth; and Grant Lorkowski took a sixth.

Blue Mtn. competes

at PowarAde tourney

CANONSBURG — Christian Gosch (145), Erech Noecker (220) and Kirk Dougherty (285) posted 3-2 records at the PowerAde Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

Gosch lost to wrestlers who placed third and fourth, respectively. The senior stands at 99 career wins.

The Eagles had no placewinners at the event, ranked as the toughest tournament in Pennsylvania and the third-best tournament in the country by Wrestling Report.
