ELIZABETHVILLE — When a fire left North Schuylkill’s gymnasium unavailable for the annual Schuylkill League Junior High Wrestling Tournament, Upper Dauphin quickly volunteered to host the 15-team event.
It was easy to see why.
The Trojans advanced eight wrestlers into the finals and crowned four champions in Saturday’s event, cruising to the team title.
Bronson Garber (105), Zachary Rupp (110), Mason Wiest (130) and Donny Gelnett (165) placed first in their respective weight classes, while Mason Trexler (85), Brock Welker (90), Ethan Paul (100) and Tyler Wright (115) were runners-up as Upper Dauphin had 13 medalists and amassed 251 team points.
Tri-Valley, which had three champions, was second in the team standings with 146.5 points, followed by Blue Mountain (140.5), Mahanoy Area (130) and Pine Grove (121). The tournament featured junior high squads from 13 of the 15 Schuylkill League teams, plus Shamokin and Danville. Brackets were fielded in 18 weight classes.
Cal Schoffstall (85), Aaron Heffron (138) and Kolt Schaeffer (185) won championships for Tri-Valley, while Blue Mountain, Mahanoy Area and Tamaqua each had two champions.
Wiley Kahler (75) and Luke Englert (100) captured gold for the Eagles; Danny Lawrence (115) and Colin Fegley (145) won titles for the Golden Bears; and Brian Milot (90) and Bronson Strouse (210) placed first for the Blue Raiders.
Other champions included Pottsville’s Raven Womer (80), Williams Valley’s Chett Pesta (95), Pine Grove’s Dillon Kintzel (122), Jim Thorpe’s Jarrin Geisinger (155) and Danville’s Deien Yeager (250).
