NEW OXFORD — Both Blue Mountain and Pottsville left the New Oxford Invitational on Saturday with some significant hardware.
Led by Erech Noecker’s gold at 220 pounds, the Eagles captured the team championship in the 30-team event.
For the Crimson Tide, Luke Gardner blitzed his way to the 120-pound crown and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Blue Mountain finished with 143.5 points. Troy (137.5) finished second, with Pleasant Valley (132), Line Mountain (130.5) and Clearfield (120) rounding out the top five. Pottsville placed 11th.
Blue Mountain coach J.J. Fasnacht said Blue Mountain also won the JV tournament team title at New Oxford.
“So that was pretty cool,’’ he said. “... Hopefully if we stay healthy and keep improving, we’ll do all right.’’
Gardner dominated at 120, posting an 18-7 major decision win over Hanover state qualifier Caleb Garland in the finals.
Pottsville had four other placewinners: Tyler Deiter (152) finished fourth; Ryan Green (106) and Brandon Kessock (182) took sixths; and Richie Bentz (126) placed eighth.
Blue Mountain had two finalists.
At 106, Josh Mason dropped a 3-0 decision to Southern Columbia’s Jaret Lane.
At 220, Noecker was all business, posting three falls then a 13-4 major decision over Northeastern’s Blaine Yinger in the finals. Noecker had a 17-second pin in the semifinals.
Other placewinners for the Eagles included Hunter Blankenhorn, fifth at 113; Christian Gosch, fifth at 145; Lucas Forbes, seventh at 152; Ian Cagle, seventh at 160; and Devon Krammes, eighth at 170.
Due to the impending snowstorm, tournament officials had wrestling continue after midnight on Day 1 to get as much of the event finished as possible.
“The guys wrestled well, real well (Friday) night,’’ Fasnacht said. “We had to wrestle into wee hours with the snow coming.
“In the morning (Saturday) we were flat, but they all finished real strong,’’ he added. “We had our ups and downs, but they wrestled well.’’
