Fightin Phils edge Trenton Softball benefit seeks players Youth swimmer with area ties excels in N.C.

READING - Eastern League home run leader Jim Murphy slammed two homers to lead the Reading Fightin Phils to a 6-5 win over the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Murphy hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the third, giving him 18 homers and 61 RBIs this season.

Zach Collier went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, two runs scored and one RBI for Reading.

Seth Rosin (7-4) gave up five runs in six innings but got the win.

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez worked out prior to Wednesday's game, but did not play with the Thunder.

FRACKVILLE - Former members and sponsors of the Shenandoah, Mahanoy City and Frackville Fast-Pitch Adult Softball League are being sought to put together a fundraiser.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 18, will gather teams and/or individuals (especially old-timers) interested in playing a friendly softball game(s) whose purpose is to raise funds to enable former team member and sponsor, Robbie Krick, to fund a heart transplant.

The event will be held at the Frackville Little League/Softball Complex on High Street, and it's open to all individuals and teams who are interested in playing. The minimum entry fee is $10 per person, made payable to the Rob Krick Heart Fund.

The deadline for entry is Friday, Aug. 2. For more information, call (570) 427-8814.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Madison Homovich of Pittsboro, N.C., recently competed in the 2013 North Carolina 14 & Under Long Course Swimming Championships. The meet was held July 11-14 in Greensboro, N.C.

Homovich competed in nine individual events and won all of them. She set three meet records in the 13-14 age category. She set new standards in the 400-meter LC freestyle, 1,500-meter LC freestyle and the 200-meter LC individual medley. Currently, Homovich is ranked the No. 1 13-year-old swimmer in the country according to USA Swimming.

Homovich earned nine time cuts to advance her to the Junior Nationals Swimming Championships to be held in Irvine, Calif., during the first week of August.

Homovich's mother, Amy, and father, Matt, are 1987 graduates of Nativity. Her grandparents are Bob and Jackie Melusky of Mar Lin and Doris and Paul Homovich of New Philadelphia.
