May 23, 2013 — District 11 Class A Championship, Blue Mountain’s Patton Field: Williams Valley center fielder Rayanne Hawk races into the right-center-field gap, makes a tremendous running catch, wheels and throws to second base. Hawk steals an RBI triple from Breanne Bentz and turns a double play that ends a fifth-inning threat and preserves the Vikings’ one-run lead over Minersville.
Williams Valley holds on for a 2-1 win, slashes through the state bracket with three routs and captures the program’s first state championship. Minersville’s season ends in the district final.
May 29, 2014 — District 11 Class A Championship, Blue Mountain’s Patton Field: Minersville center fielder Adrienne Kroznuskie charges a sinking line drive off the bat of Williams Valley’s Kyrsten Miller, makes a diving, tumbling catch, then flips to shortstop Reighly Melochick, who steps on second base for a game-ending double play.
Minersville wins 2-1, bashes its way through the state playoffs with three blowouts and captures the program’s ninth state championship. Williams Valley’s season ends in the district final with its only loss of the season.
It’s that close between the Miners and Vikings, Schuylkill League Division II rivals and state powers. Tri-Valley, which pushed the Vikings to extra innings twice last season, is right there, too.
“We’re looking for a few days in May,’’ Minersville coach Dave Homa said of the district semifinal and final. “It’s difficult to get to states through this division (and district).’’
While the Division II battles remain the same, the Schuylkill League changes with another realignment. The addition of Lehighton prompted an 8-5-5 setup.
In a nutshell, Lehighton enters Division I, and Lourdes jumps from Division II to I. Nativity moves from Division III to II, while Panther Valley shifts from Division I to III.
“One thing for certain about playing in the Schuylkill League is that there are many well-coached and highly skilled players, which is evident by their postseason play over the years,’’ Lehighton coach Greg Poremba said. “This is exciting, and our players are looking forward to the year with great anticipation.’’
DIVISION I
Pottsville entered last season as the heavy favorite to win the division title. The Crimson Tide didn’t disappoint, rolling through the division undefeated and reaching the Schuylkill League final before falling in extra innings to Williams Valley.
Graduation, though, hit the Tide hard as Pottsville lost the top six batters in its order.
One of those was shortstop Morgan Alisauckas (.542), the Republican-Herald’s All-Area Player of the Year. Alisauckas is now starting at Division I Mount St. Mary’s.
Senior pitcher Sara Tobin (12-6, 1.34 ERA), senior catcher Cortney Dusel, senior outfielder Rachael Setlock and senior Michaela Garland return. Garland will likely move from the outfield to an infield spot this season.
Pottsville has nine seniors on its roster looking to earn starting jobs.
In addition to Tobin, left-handed sophomores Olivia Moran and Jessica Porter saw action in the varsity circle last season.
The Tide had similar holes to fill in 2012. They responded by winning the Division I and District 11 Class AAA championships.
“Hopefully history repeats itself,’’ Pottsville coach Chuck Rinaldo said. “We are optimistic.’’
If Pottsville slides, look for North Schuylkill and Tamaqua to pounce on the opportunity. The Spartans and Blue Raiders tied at 9-3 in Division I until Christie Hutira’s perfect game in the tiebreaker contest gave the Spartans a 3-0 victory, the wild card and a spot in the league playoffs.
Now a senior, Hutira (16-8, 1.87 ERA) has plenty of big-game experience and lots of talent around her.
Junior shortstop Tiffany Lapotsky (.420, 41 SB) is as much a threat on the softball diamond as she is on the basketball court. She was an All-Area first-teamer a year ago.
Senior first baseman Chase Stokes (.324) is a four-year starter, with senior second baseman Eliza Schally (.375) back for her third year in the lineup.
Junior third baseman Rachel Gricoski (.361), junior outfielder Kelly Damiter and junior catcher Abbey Peleschak also return.
“We’ve got to finish what we start,’’ North Schuylkill coach Dominick Grasso said of making a deeper playoff run. “We’ve got to get to that next level.’’
At Tamaqua, coach Jillian Knoblauch has been building toward this season for several years. The Blue Raiders return 9-of-10 starters and are primed to be bigger factors in the division and district.
Four seniors lead the way: third baseman Shayna Dietrich (.406), catcher Carly Sassaman (.409), outfielder Bailey Hartung and infielder Brianna Wittig (.316).
Pitcher Bailey Pedersen (12-10, 2.14 ERA) is the ace, with first baseman Taylor Fritz, shortstop Lynn Kistler and outfielder Hannah Perla all part of the junior class. Sophomore outfielder Cailyn Joseph is back as well.
“We basically return everyone from last year’s team,’’ Knoblauch said. “We did well last year but we want to improve on last year’s record and on the season as a whole.
“The girls have high expectations for themselves this year and I believe they can achieve their goals as long as they stick together and play as a team,’’ she added. “If we can stay healthy, continue to work hard at practice and make ourselves better every day, we will have a successful year.’’
Pine Grove started just one senior many times last season, and now the Cardinals welcome an influx of 10 freshmen. That senior, All-Area first-teamer Jeena Sidleck (.486), will be difficult to replace, but Pine Grove returns six players with starting experience.
Senior catcher Hayley Wolff (.302), senior third baseman Brittany Whitman and senior outfielder Alyssa Hatter lead the way. Junior outfielder McKenzee Warner, sophomore second baseman Jennifer Kaufman (.319) and sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Hasenauer (.300) are back, too.
Ninth-graders Brooke Schach and Caitlyn Becher will look to upgrade the Cardinals’ pitching.
“We will rely on the upperclassmen to lead this young, talented group of underclassmen,’’ Pine Grove coach Ryan Leffler said.
Blue Mountain has a new head coach in Gerry Kresge and a few senior standouts in catcher Amanda Labe (.396) and outfielder Karissa Elser (.404). Senior Catherine Washko (2-2) will handle most of the pitching.
Sophomore shortstop Emily Renninger, junior pitcher-third baseman Erika Gerace, senior first baseman Lindsay LaScala and junior center fielder Steph Harding also return.
“To be successful, we will need tremendous input from young underclassmen and a pitching staff that has very little varsity experience,’’ Kresge said. “We are approaching the year one game and one building block at a time.’’
The wild card in the division is Lehighton, which has made steady improvement under third-year head coach Poremba. The Indians were 5-15 two years ago and 9-13 and a Mountain Valley Conference and district qualifier in 2014.
Lehighton returns its entire starting lineup, including four seniors in catcher Kelsey Andrews, shortstop Sophia Everett, outfielder Brooke Scott and first baseman Jill Guzenski.
“There is a certain level of maturity and investment I have been seeing from our girls, and I expect that to show on and off the field all year long,’’ Poremba said. “Last year they showed glimpses of the potential they have.’’
Jim Thorpe, which jumped from 1-19 in 2013 to 6-14 last season, looks to continue that momentum. Sophomore pitchers Maggie Holloway, Jada Hoherchak and Joclyn Day return to give the Olympians something to build around.
As part of the realignment, Lourdes comes up to Division I. The Red Raiders, who have a co-op with Mount Carmel, have a young team with just four returning starters. The only senior is four-year catcher Caity Funk (.553).

DIVISION II
In 2013, Williams Valley finished third in Division II and first in the state.
Last season, Minersville finished second in Division II and first in the state.
“It’s the best division in Pennsylvania,’’ Homa said. “The three No. 1 Class A teams in the state, the three No. 1 pitchers in the state and most of the best players in the state in one division, and most of them are coming back. So it’s a dogfight.’’
Welcome to Schuylkill League Division II, where only the strong survive.
That survival of the fittest will continue without three of the top pitchers the league has produced. Republican-Herald All-Area Pitcher of the Year Cassidy Pinchorski of Williams Valley (19-1, 0.66 ERA), Minersville’s Riley Gerenda (15-3, 1.19 ERA) and Tri-Valley’s Katie Rabuck (11-6, 1.00 ERA) have graduated.
For Williams Valley, junior Tianna Yanoscak (4-0, 1.03 ERA) will take the ball. Minersville will go with sophomores Kroznuskie(2-0, 0.00 ERA), Maura Bentz (1-0) and Mallory Ebert (1-0). Tri-Valley will lean on senior Taryn Wilson (4-1, 1.45 ERA) in the circle.
“You may see us throw two or three pitchers in the same game,’’ Homa said.
All of those pitchers have the ability to become a No. 1 starter. Yet none of them has taken the ball in the big game at the varsity level.
How will they react and respond when a borderline 3-2 pitch gets called ball four, loading the bases with two outs of a tie game in the bottom of the sixth inning?
“Tianna worked hard all summer. She deserves the chance to be the ace,’’ Williams Valley coach Lee Reiser said. “I think she can handle it, but you don’t know until she does it. I think she’s going to be fine.’’
Let’s take a closer look at each team in the division, starting with the last team standing last season — nine-time state champion Minersville.
The Big Blue Machine graduated a senior class that won two state titles, led by shortstop Reighly Melochick (.493), catcher Morgen Woodford (.473), second baseman Leah Leshko (.414), left fielder Alyse Ryan (.345) and Gerenda.
Fortunately for the Miners, they return many of the elite athletes — mostly sophomores — who helped the girls’ basketball team win back-to-back District 11 Class AA championships.
Kroznuskie, a center fielder, earned All-Area Rookie of the Year honors by batting .611 with nine home runs, 37 RBIs and 47 runs scored.
Sophomore first baseman Emily Mealey (.424, 40 RBIs), senior right fielder Lindsey Snyder (.494, 28 RBIs), junior third baseman Rachel Sterner (.421) and Bentz (.364) provide pop in Minersville’s potent lineup.
Sophomore basketball star Abby Schoffstall missed last season with an injury but projects as Minersville’s shortstop.
No starting job is owned at Minersville. Daily competition makes everyone better. The club just needs some game experience to build cohesiveness.
“They’re all gonna play,’’ Homa said. “We’ll make a decision on what’s best for the team. It may not be best for the individual, but what’s best for the team is what’s going to happen.’’
All Williams Valley did the last season and a half was win a state title, put together a 31-game winning streak and capture a division and overall Schuylkill League championship.
The Vikings graduated Pinchorski (.479, six home runs, 30 RBIs) and third baseman Kylie Doyle (.400, 32 RBIs), but seven starters return.
Five seniors are four-year starters: All-Area first-team shortstop Hannah Nestor (.429, 37 runs), catcher Maura Kreiser (.361), first baseman Haley Nestor (.377), right fielder Kyrsten Miller and left fielder Bindy Boyer.
Hawk (.432, 28 runs), second baseman Kate Whelski (.411, 23 RBIs) and Yanoscak (.479) make up the junior class. Look for sophomore third baseman-pitcher Caitlyn Pinchorski (.400, 25 runs) to make a bigger contribution this season.
“The attitude is incredible,’’ Reiser said. “Hannah and Haley are captains. The effort has been super, no drama, and as far as being a unit, they are very, very tight.
“Look for that kind of camaraderie this year,’’ he added. “It’s really been fun. I’m really excited about what’s going on.’’
Exciting things are going on at Tri-Valley, which is the third member of the Big 3.
Though Rabuck graduated, the Bulldogs return a veteran club.
Wilson had a monster season at the plate in 2014 that made her an All-Area first-teamer. She batted .549 with 30 runs, seven doubles, seven triples, four home runs and 44 RBIs.
Senior outfielder Taylor Header (.339), junior catcher Cat Troutman (.353), sophomore shortstop Wendy Header (.437, 24 runs) and sophomore outfielder Maddie Horn (.340) are other key Dawgs.
“We have an older team with experience, and we figure to be right in the middle of the dogfight for the division and district crowns,’’ Tri-Valley coach Marty Shade said. “It should be another wild race in Division II.’’
Looking to keep pace in the powerhouse division are Schuylkill Haven and Nativity.
The Hurricanes have their eyes on a district berth this season. With seven returning starters, including a Division I recruit, they have the makings of an improved ballclub.
Senior Emma Schweigert, an All-Stater and a La Salle University recruit, leads the way. The catcher-center fielder hit .584 last season with eight home runs and 37 RBIs.
Sophomore Kassidy Svenson (.426) will be the primary pitcher; sophomore Sarah Personette will see time behind the plate and at first base; and sophomore Alyssa Gerber returns at shortstop. Senior second baseman-pitcher Elizabeth Bayliff is a four-year starter.
“We have a nice mix of returning players and first-year starters,’’ Schuylkill Haven coach Tim Schweigert said. “We have very aggressive young players.
“We should have a very competitive team, and we are looking to improve on last year’s record and challenge for a district spot.’’
Nativity returns six starters, including junior shortstop Rachael Souchak (.455), senior infielder-pitcher Ryleigh Walaconis (.408), junior outfielder Jocelyn Holobetz (.340) and sophomore third baseman Dez Riegel (.325).
Senior outfielder Lauren Palko and sophomore outfielder Allie Miske (.362) should see some time pitching, too, as the Golden Girls look to qualify for districts for the third straight season.
Since the league playoffs returned in 2009, Minersville, Tri-Valley and Williams Valley have won two division titles apiece.
“With the addition of Nativity, now the toughest small-school division in the state got even tougher,’’ Shade said.

Last year: 8-12, 5-8 D-II
Returnees: Emma Schweigert (sr., cf-c), Morgan Wagner (sr., lf), Elizabeth Bayliff (sr., 2b-p), Cheyanne Reichert (sr., 1b-rf), Megan Ditzler (jr., c-of), Kassidy Svenson (soph., p-of), Sarah Personette (soph., c-1b), Alyssa Gerber (soph., ss), Sarah Donati (soph., 3b)

Outlook: Haven has one of best players in league in La Salle recruit Emma Schweigert among four seniors and a strong sophomore class. If team can gel quickly, Hurricanes could improve and challenge for district playoff berth.
Tri-Valley
Head coach: Marty Shade (24th season)
Last year: 15-7, 9-4 D-II. District 11 Class A semifinalist
Returnees: Taryn Wilson (sr., p), Brittany Geist (sr., ss), Taylor Header (sr., cf), Megan Boyer (sr., 1b), Katie Dietrich (sr., lf), Jordyn Ebersole (sr., 2b), Dinaea Otto (sr., 1b), Kat Sherry (jr., 3b), Cat Troutman (jr., c), Wendy Header (soph., ss), Maddie Horn (soph., rf)

Williams Valley
Head coach: Lee Reiser (22nd season)
Last year: 23-1, 13-0 D-II. Division II champion, Schuylkill League champion, District 11 Class A runner-up

Newcomers: Morgan Diegert (soph., c), Autumn Calnon (soph., of), Kali Whitcomb (fr., of), Morgan Updegrove (fr., p-inf), Baillee McNeal (fr., inf)
Outlook: Vikes are 31-1 with a state title since May 2013. They return seven starters. Enough said. Ranks with Minersville as top two Class A teams in the state until somebody proves otherwise.
DIVISION III
This five-team group remained pretty much the same, with defending champion Marian, Mahanoy Area, Shenandoah Valley and Weatherly staying put. Division runner-up Nativity exits to Division II, and rebuilding Panther Valley enters from Division I.
That adds up to the Fillies entering the season as the strong favorite to win their fourth title in the past five seasons. The fact that Marian returns seven starters doesn’t hurt, either.
Senior pitcher Bethany Shaud (16-5, 2.98 ERA) is the Fillies’ ace, and the fourth-year starter helped herself at the plate with 23 RBIs.
Senior shortstop Bryianna Pearson (.431, 23 RBIs) and senior Alex Stroia (.371, 27 runs) are also four-year starters for Marian.
Other returnees include junior second baseman Kaitlin Kowker (.365) and sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Joy.
The goal for Marian is to become more competitive when it gets to the league and district playoffs.
“As with any season, we are anxious to get started,’’ Marian coach Joe DeAngelo said. “The girls have worked hard in the offseason to maximize their potential. They understand that everything that you accomplish has to be earned.
“With that in mind, there is good competition taking place at practice that will hopefully be carried into our season,’’ he added. “We’d like to defend our divisional championship and, if possible, take things as far as possible.’’
The first job is to take care of business in the division, and that means taking on rival Mahanoy Area.
The Golden Bears had a strong finish to qualify for districts last season. In early May, Mahanoy Area had a 3-9 record before going on a 7-1 run to get back to .500.
Junior pitcher Emily Bruce returns with a varsity season under her belt, and she will throw to catcher Nicole Wilner (.391).
Four other seniors — third baseman Emily Davidson, shortstop Kelly Walinchus, second baseman Jamie Rago and outfielder Tamara Tunstall — are returning starters.
“With five senior starters, much-improved pitching and team speed, we have very high expectations for this season,’’ Mahanoy Area coach Joe Hullihan said.
The other three teams in the division are in different phases of the rebuilding process.
Weatherly may be a team to watch as the Wreckers return seven senior starters. Pitchers Kelly Parker and Jess Polchin are four-year regulars, as are catcher Jessica Maiello and outfielder Tea Heister.
“We’re hoping for consistent pitching and improved hitting to try to make a return to the district playoffs,’’ Weatherly coach Margaret Brown said. “The last two years we came up a little short. We feel we have the talent to accomplish this goal.’’
Shenandoah Valley should have better pitching this season as sophomore Katie Petrushonis has a year of experience and senior Caitlin Bonk returns to the team. Bonk played her first two seasons but took last spring off.
Panther Valley starts over under first-year head coach Candace Olson, a former Pottsville High player. It’s her first year teaching math at Panther Valley and her first year as a head coach.
Senior catcher Lexi Rodriguez and junior third baseman Hannah Hill are two of the Panthers’ leaders on the 25-girl roster.
“This season we are looking to improve our skills overall and work our way back up in the Schuylkill League,’’ Olson said. “We have good numbers this year and a fantastic group of girls. I am very excited for the season to start.’’

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE
With the addition of Susquenita, the TVL has undergone realignment. The league now has a two-division setup, with Upper Dauphin, Millersburg, Line Mountain and Halifax in the East Division. Juniata, East Juniata, Newport, Greenwood and Susquenita make up the West Division.
The top two teams in each division will qualify for the league playoffs.
Nonetheless, everyone will be chasing the Trojans, who won their third straight league title last season. Millersburg, Line Mountain and Susquenita look to be the league’s other top teams.
The Trojans, though, appear to be up to the challenge. They return seven starters and add depth with some talented underclassmen.
One loss — and it’s huge — is the graduation of All-Area first-teamer and All-Stater Amber Bingaman, who’s now playing at Messiah. Bingaman hit .620 last season and left as the school record-holder in 15 categories, including hits, doubles, triples, home runs and batting average.
Taking over the leadership duties will be four-year pitcher-shortstop Taylor Brown, who hit .439 last season and went 8-5 with a 2.11 ERA in the circle.
Junior first baseman Autumn Walker (.327), sophomore third baseman Megan Crosby (.333), sophomore shortstop-outfielder Kendra Schlegel (.328) and senior designated player Kaytee Mattern (22 RBIs) give the Trojans some pop at the plate.
Sophomore Mickayla Grow will move from center field to second base and also see some time in the circle. In addition, junior Grace Klinger is back as the team’s catcher.
“I really like the athleticism that this team has,’’ Upper Dauphin coach Chad Everhart said. “We have more athletes and speed than we have ever had in the 5 years that I have been at Upper Dauphin.
“I am really excited about the potential that this team has,’’ he added. “Pitching is definitely the strength of our team. We have five girls who can really throw. I have confidence to put any of them in at any time.
“Our goals as always are to win the Tri-Valley League, win districts and make a run in states.’’
Upper Dauphin
Head coach: Chad Everhart (5th season)
Last year: 13-8, 12-2 TVL. Tri-Valley League champion, District 3 Class A semifinalist
Returnees: Taylor Brown (sr., p-ss), Kaytee Mattern (sr., p-1b-dp), Kaylyn Bohner (sr., ss), Autumn Walker (jr., 1b), Grace Klinger (jr., c), Mickayla Grow (soph., p-2b), Kendra Schlegel (soph., ss-rf), Megan Crosby (soph., 3b), Diana Quiroz (jr., rf)
Newcomers: Terry Shoop (sr., of), Riley Mahoney (jr., 1b-dp), Lexi Bowser (jr., 3b), Caitlyn Reed (soph., of), Lexi Weaver (fr., p-ss-of), Alli Snyder (fr., cf-2b-c), Gracie Miller (fr., of-c)
Outlook: Trojans return seven starters from last season’s Tri-Valley League championship team. Four-year star Amber Bingaman will be missed, but club has the makings of one that could be much improved from last season.
BERKS LEAGUE
For a club with one senior, the Hawks will field an experienced team this season.
To begin, six starters return from 2014. Two others who started as freshmen in 2013 but ran track last season are back on the diamond. With two strong pitchers as well, Hamburg is positioned to be a factor as it defends its Berks II title in what is expected to be a tight race once again.
Junior third baseman Rebecca Blatt, an All-Berks League pick, batted .397 with five homers and 24 RBIs last season. Sophomore pitcher-first baseman Erica Lutz hit .400 with eight doubles a year ago. The Hawks, though, will have to get production from others to put runs on the board.
In the circle, junior Paige Lesher (13-9) returns after a solid season as the No. 1. Lutz will also take the ball, giving Hamburg options when the make-up games start to pile up.
The return of track athletes Chyanne Lesher (SS-OF) and Hannah Shirk (2B-OF) significantly helps the Hawks’ depth.
“We are fortunate to have two very good pitchers,’’ Hamburg coach Buddy Zimmerman said. “It will take a few games to gel and find a steady lineup. We have a lot of options with a lot of players who can move around the diamond, but we’re hoping to determine the lineup early.’’
Hamburg
Head coach: Buddy Zimmerman (14th season)

Outlook: Young club (1 senior) returns six starters. If Hawks can find right lineup, they could improve last year’s record and challenge for the Berks II title.
