HS BASEBALL: Minersville edges Upper Dauphin in 9 innings

ELIZABETHVILLE — The stage was set for a dramatic walk-off victory.

Minersville’s Ryan Nettles wouldn’t let it happen.

Nettles induced a groundout with the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth to help the Miners edge Upper Dauphin 6-5 in a non-league baseball game Saturday.

Tied at 4 heading into the ninth, Steele Fekette broke the tie with an RBI single. Connor Andruchek then hit a sacrifice fly to give Minersville a 6-4 lead.

Upper Dauphin got one run back on Kyle Glouner’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, but Nettles got a game-ending groundout to leave Upper Dauphin runners on second and third base.

Dave Pedron had two hits for Minersville. Glouner had three hits for the Trojans.

Northern Lehigh 3

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Chris Burke hit a one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to boost North Schuylkill past Northern Lehigh in a non-league game.

John Rupinski singled to begin the inning and advanced on Tevin Murray’s base hit. After Alek Hummel hit into a force play at second base, Burke posted his game-winning hit on a 2-2 count.

Murray had three hits and Rupinski, Bobby Wagner and Burke each had two for the Spartans.

Josh Hamm had two hits for Northern Lehigh.

SHENANDOAH — Jason Richmond tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts and hit a two-run single to help Mahanoy Area earn its first win of the season with a non-league victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Richmond outdueled the Blue Devils’ Nick Gurski, who held Mahanoy Area to two hits through six innings.

John Koszyk hit an RBI single for Shenandoah Valley.

HALIFAX — Tyler Lucas was 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to lead Tri-Valley to a wild non-league victory over Halifax.

Hunter Herb also had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Dawgs, while Hunter Bordner was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Dawson Schwalm, Dominic Carado and Logan Yoder each had two hits.

Will Kimmel got the win on the mound despite allowing eight runs and 12 hits in four innings. Bordner closed the game with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to seal the win.

Matt Osenbach had four hits for Halifax.

Eagles sweep twinbill

SUNBURY — Adam Hull, Dean Stramara and Sean Greenawalt had two hits apiece, while Troy Moyer had a key RBI double in the third to lift Blue Mountain to a 4-2 victory over Shikellamy in the first game of a doubleheader.

In Game 2, Austin Krammes, Lane Koury and Moyer combined on a five-hit shutout as the Eagles blanked the Braves 2-0.

Blue Mountain led 1-0 after two innings in the opener. Stramara drove in the first run of the third, while Moyer followed with his RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Sean Greenawalt pitched two innings of relief to get the win.

In the second game, the Eagles scored both their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dave Kyslinger knocked in the first run with RBI triple, while Koury brought home Kyslinger on a suicide squeeze.

Brett Hardy finished 3-for-4 to lead the Bears at the plate.
