Baker named new volleball coach
TAMAQUA — The Tamaqua Area School District announced the hiring of Emilie Baker as the new head girls’ volleyball coach.
Baker is a Nativity graduate who played for three straight District 11 Class A championship volleyball teams with the Green Wave. She was named twice to the Republican Herald All-Area first team.
Baker played collegiately for four seasons at DeSales University.
Schuylkill teams make Small CWS
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Both the Penn State Schuylkill baseball and softball teams learned their seasons would be extended Friday.
The local Lions each earned bids to the USCAA Small College World Series, earning at-large bids to their respective tournaments.
The baseball team earned a No. 10 seed in the tournament slated for Hampton, Va. Schuylkill (16-11) will face University of Cincinnati-Clermont in the tournament opener with the winner meeting Penn State Greater Allegheny.
The ninth-seeded Lions (16-10) softball squad will meet Berea (Ky.) in its Small College World Series opener May 11 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The winner faces No. 1 seed St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.).
Laubach wins
Big D feature
FORESTVILLE — Quakertown’s Rick Laubach captured the 25-lap feature in the 358 modifieds Friday night at Big Diamond Speedway.
In the 20-lap ARDC midget feature, Douglassville driver Tim Buckwalter took the checkered flag.
The modified challenge went to Billy Pauch Jr., of Frenchtown, New Jersey.
