MINERSVILLE — Shenandoah Valley scored two runs in the seventh inning on an error and two walks to beat Mount Carmel 5-3 and win the consolation game of the Russ Rothermel Tournament on Tuesday.

Ian McCole had seven strikeouts on the mound and two hits to pace the Blue Devils, who overcame four errors.

Bret Williams struck out 14 for the Red Tornadoes, who had three errors.

Austin Joraskie had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for Mount Carmel.

WEATHERLY — Troy Kimmel had a three-run triple and Brian Miller scored four runs as the Golden Bears downed the Wreckers in a non-league contest.

Kyle Osifat went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Weatherly (2-15), which had six hits and committed seven errors. Ron Gerhart had a double and run scored for the Wreckers.

Steve Middleton got the pitching victory for Mahanoy Area (4-15), which backed him with a 14-hit attack. Osifat took the loss.

College Softball

PSU-Schuylkill drops 2,

places 10th at Series

AKRON, Ohio — Penn State Schuylkill put a lot of runs on the board but lost twice to finish 10th at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association World Series.

In a game that was suspended Monday night in the second inning, PSU-Hazleton held on for a 9-7 victory over PSU-Schuylkill.

In the ninth-place game, PSU-Brandywine outslugged PSU-Schuylkill 13-11.

Hazleton built a 9-1 lead after three innings before Schuylkill rallied. Marcella Scheeler hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, while Erin Luckenbill went 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs for the local Lions.

Joelle Moyer went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Luckenbill added three hits as another Schuylkill rally fell short.

Katy Steffen’s three-run home run keyed Brandywine’s six-run first inning.
