LANCASTER — Scouts flocked to Lancaster Catholic for Thursday’s District 3 Class AA quarterfinal to see freshman phenom Dillon Marsh pitch.
They left talking about Upper Dauphin’s Kyle Glouner.
The Trojans’ junior right-hander pitched a gem, tossing a four-hit shutout and striking out six as Upper Dauphin upset the top-seeded Crusaders 4-0.
The victory advances the eighth-seeded Trojans (13-9) to Tuesday’s semifinals, where they’ll play No. 5 York Catholic (12-5) at a site and time to be determined. York Catholic edged Delone Catholic 2-1.
“It’s the best game I’ve ever seen him throw,” Upper Dauphin coach Ryan Lentz said of Glouner. “Dillon Marsh is the No. 1 freshman prospect in Pennsylvania, and there were a lot of scouts there. Kyle didn’t disappoint them.”
A Republican-Herald All-Area first-team pitcher last year, Glouner has battled injuries for most of the season. He was on the money Thursday, facing just 23 hitters, walking none and reaching a three-ball count just four times in his 85-pitch effort.
Upper Dauphin backed him with a balanced attack, scoring single runs in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings and finishing with nine hits.
After Tanner Miller and Kaleb Hoch led off the game with singles, Casey Wise gave UDA a 1-0 lead with a safety squeeze bunt.
Dylan Lesher had an RBI single in the fourth, Travis Deitrich plated a run with a single in the sixth and Glouner roped an RBI double in the seventh.
After a rough regular season, Upper Dauphin is in the district semifinals.
“Coming out of the regular season we had, we just couldn’t seem to put the pieces together at the same time,” Lentz said. “The last two games, especially tonight, we were in control from the first pitch.
“I have not seen that one time this season. Kudos to my guys. I’m very proud of them.”

PEN ARGYL — Corrine Ashmore tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out five as the third-seeded Green Knights blanked the Cardinals in a Class AA quarterfinal.
Pine Grove was held to singles by Hayley Wolff and Jen Kaufman. The Cards’ best scoring chance came in the fourth, when Pine Grove had runners on first and second with one out but could not score.
Pen Argyl scored a run in the first to take an early lead, then broke the game open in the sixth, combining three hits with two errors to score four runs.
The Cardinals are a relatively young team, but coach Jason Leffler praised his seniors — Wolff, Alyssa Hatter and Brittanie Whitman — for their dedication and leadership.
“Overall, we fought to the end all year long. This was a great opportunity for them,” Leffler said. “I’m proud of them, and we took a step in right direction.
“I’m sad to see seniors go, but without them being great leaders, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
