Lehighton star wrestler picks Old Dominion

LEHIGHTON — Lehighton senior wrestler Connor Frey has verbally committed to Division I Old Dominion University, athletic director Kyle Spotts announced Tuesday.

Old Dominion (13-5 last season) is a member of the Mid-American Conference and is coached by Steve Martin.

Frey finished his junior year with an overall 102-27 record. Last year he went 38-6, was a Schuylkill League champion, District 11 champion and placed seventh at the PIAA Class AA Championships at 182 pounds.

He is ranked as the 51st best recruit in the state by PA Powerwrestling. He plans to study engineering at ODU.

Football officials

to hold clinic

The Schuylkill Chapter of PIAA Football Officials will hold an on-field clinic Sunday, Aug. 9, at Schuylkill Haven Area High School’s Rotary Field. The clinic will run from 2-4 p.m.

Note the date change.

The clinic will be run by chapter interpreter Jim Toomey, along with various guest speakers and clinicians. Officials are asked to wear casual referee attire (shorts, shirt, shoes) and to bring a whistle. The clinic will be held rain or shine.

Blue Mtn. golfer caps LV Open

EASTON — Blue Mountain senior Bailey Sophy finished tied for 12th on Tuesday at the Golf Association of the Lehigh Valley Open at Northampton Country Club.

Sophy shot 78 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 10-over-par 76-78—154.

Kevin Rossi shot 73-72—145 to win the title.
