Logano, Busch plagued by fuel decisions

LONG POND — Joey Logano and Kyle Busch had the two dominant cars Sunday in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway, combining to lead 116 of the 160 laps.

Neither, however, came away with the win. Both ran were among the many cars to run out of fuel in the race’s final laps, enabling Matt Kenseth to steal the checkered flag.

Instead of a trip to Victory Lane, the two drivers were left to lament what happened. More so Busch, who was denied a chance at history. He had won three straight races and was trying to become the eighth driver in NASCAR’s modern era (since 1972) to win four in a row.

It also kept him out of the top 30 in the point standings. Busch must finish there to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup over the final 10 races.

“Man, that’s a bummer,” said Busch, who was in the top 30 in points prior to running out of gas. “We would be celebrating a win and a Chase berth.”

About the only consolation Busch took was the fact one of his teammates won.

“They played it right and we didn’t,” Busch said. “It’s definitely good for Joe Gibbs Racing. “
