Stassi, Wathan receive Eastern League awards

READING — Reading Fightin Phils first baseman Brock Stassi and manager Dusty Wathan received major awards from the Eastern League on Saturday.

Stassi was named the Most Valuable Player while Wathan was named Manager of the Year.

Stassi is batting .312 with 32 doubles, 14 home runs, 88 RBIs and 73 runs in 124 games played. He also was the winning pitcher in one game this season.

Wathan has led the Fightin Phils to the league’s best record and had a 280-277 record in four seasons at Reading entering Saturday’s game.

Safety commits to Penn State

STATE COLLEGE — Hickory High School senior safety Andrew Pryts announced Saturday that he will continue his football career at Penn State.

Pryts, a four-star prospect, chose the Nittany Lions over more than two dozen college programs.

Pryts’ father, Ed, was a linebacker at Penn State in the 1970s.
