BOYS' SOCCER: Lehighton team to beat after inaugural year in Schuylkill League

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Lehighton’s players stopped to look at the boys’ soccer banners hanging on the chain-link fence entering Schuylkill Haven’s Rotary Field before an Aug. 25 scrimmage with the Hurricanes.

The combination of Schuylkill League and District 11 titles showcased on the walkway into the stadium would’ve seemed a mere dream for the Indians only a few years ago, when the side frequented the bottom of the now-defunct Mountain Valley Conference.

Not anymore.

Lehighton’s inaugural season in the Schuylkill League last year transformed from a scouting party aimed at learning more about its new opponents to a championship run, defeating Blue Mountain 2-1 in overtime for the league title to give the Indians a banner of their own.

It’s a turnaround that has Lehighton in an unfamiliar position among the league favorites.

“In the MVC, we were always at the bottom of the table. It was such a drastic change,” Indians senior midfielder Zach Christoff said. “But we’re hoping to repeat it this year. A lot of seniors are moving on this year and we want to make it a great season. A lot of these guys have been playing together since age 9.”

And a lot of those guys can fill the net.

Lehighton’s Joe Marks was the league’s leading scorer in 2014 with 25 goals and 19 assists. Christoff was second with 18 goals and 19 assists. Dan Baka was ninth with 13 goals and 13 assists. Republican-Herald All-Area Rookie of the Year Frank Bokan put in 13 goals, including the overtime winner in the league title game. The Indians also bring back their fifth- and sixth-leading scorers in Pat Lawler and Ben Cordova.

As if that wasn’t enough, they also return vocal junior goalkeeper Tyler Dietz, who was tied for the league lead in shutouts last year.

But none of that changes coach Dave Yob’s outlook on the approaching season.

“We’re still, I view it, the new kids on the block,” he said. “We were fortunate last year to end up with the championship. I know just because of that we’ll have the target on our back. We have to bring our A-game every time we step on the field, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from us.”

Let’s break down the divisions:

Division I

Most teams — even league favorites — have a weakness. Lehighton knows its is on defense.

The Indians do bring back big senior defender Josh Knappenberger but graduated Chris Lawler and Craig Serfass — both of whom received accolades last season.

“We might have a few 9-7 games,” Yob said with a laugh. “We’ve got a couple new people on defense we’re trying to break in. ... We’ve got two all-league defenders gone and we’ve got to replace them. And it’s probably going to be with young kids in both places.”

Blue Mountain knows a thing or two about turnover. Only in this case, the defending Division I champion Eagles have more than usual.

A star-studded 2014 senior class highlighted by All-Area Player of the Year Fritz Miller has left a depleted midfield and back line in Orwigsburg. The only true returning starters are forwards Cam Greenawalt and Jonathan Benner, goalkeeper Aaron Albertini and defender Angus Fortune, who will move up to center midfield this season.

Still, the Eagles look primed for yet another Schuylkill League playoff run.

“We’re not going to be like last year, but we’re playing half-decent,” Blue Mountain coach Rob Burcik said. “I’m a lot happier right now than I thought I’d be.”

The players that provided Blue Mountain depth last season will be taking over well-earned starting spots this year. Scott Cox, Ryan Brooks, Ian Leiby and Mitch Yeakley got significant time off the bench last year playing behind four seniors and will take over key midfield positions.

An inexperienced back line will play in front of Albertini, who developed into one of the league’s best between the woodwork during the course of last season after working with assistant coach Josh Ott.

While defending its division title would be nice, Blue Mountain knows the real prize lies beyond.

“Winning your division isn’t any good if you don’t win the league,” Burcik said.

That’s something the Eagles know well after last year. But they’re not the only ones gunning for a spot in the postseason.

Pottsville brings back a solid core from last year’s side, most notably senior midfielder Jake DiCello and junior ball magician Fernando Rivera.

The Crimson Tide’s biggest graduation losses come in the form of Tyler Wright, a 20-goal scorer last season, midfield leader Shea Golden and goalkeeper Kyle Brennan, all of whom appeared on the All-Area team last year.

But back are familiar names across the pitch — Eli Wood, Cole Demcher, Brandon Daubert, Jake Horning and others. Perhaps the most attention, though, will fall to sophomore goalkeeper Tobias Serrian, who had an excellent preseason ahead of his first real varsity action.

The Crimson Tide were neck-and-neck with Pine Grove in the divisional standings last year, but might have more of an advantage on the Cardinals this time around.

Junior forwards Cameron Shollenberger, who tallied 11 goals in 2014, and Michael Elo impressed last season for Pine Grove. But the Cardinals’ losses can’t be hidden, most notably All-State nomination and All-Area first-team defender Marcus Brown.

Jim Thorpe may use that as an opportunity to bump up to the top half of Division I. The Olympians have big numbers and quality returnees in senior midfielder Luke Morris, senior goalkeeper Carter Rodriguez and junior forward Cody Geiser.

Greg Sheeler takes over at Tamaqua after previously serving as an assistant in the program. The Blue Raiders will have a big sophomore class from which to choose replacements for graduated goal poachers Josh Delp and Roberto Borrero.

Trying to fill that void will likely be senior Robert Stidham and juniors Tyler Hollenbach and Riley McHugh. Having senior defender Thorn Devlin and junior goalkeeper Hunter Banavage back will help keep the Raiders afloat.

North Schuylkill should add a couple wins to its record following an 0-18 season last year, but the important thing for the Spartans will be keeping scoring threats Corey Reinoehl and Liam Wolfe healthy.

Division II

Take a quick glance at Schuylkill Haven’s 2015 roster and the differences are glaring.

Last year’s 12 seniors who contributed heavily to the Hurricanes’ success during their careers have graduated. While another large senior class takes over, there is a noticeable drop-off in underclassmen.

Still, in Schuylkill Haven, even a small team is a championship contender.

“Our numbers are lower than any other time they’ve been in the last 10 years,” coach Vanco Georgevic said. “But we have some players that have seen quite a bit of action in the past.”

Among them are Dawson Evitts and Owen Pothering up front, Blake Handling in the middle and David Chesakis and Collin Bartol on the back line, just to name a few.

Georgevic also said sophomores Ben Connors, Jake Romberger and Brendan Clauser and exchange student Roberto Uribe Xacur impressed in preseason.

Cole Handling is moving from a field position to goalkeeper, a decision he made during the offseason after working with a goalkeeper coach. He’ll start the season in goal taking over for graduated Brad Fryer, with senior David Zimmerman potentially seeing time if Handling needs to move into the field.

“Ultimately, when the first game comes around, we’ll be ready,” Georgevic said.

Which is good, because Nativity will be a Hurricane hunter again this year.

The Hilltoppers return many of their playmakers from last season’s historical run to the league and district semifinals. Back in the field are Ricardo Chagolla, Alvaro Mendez, Ayden Adams, Junior Menjivar and Cristian Vazquez. Also back is senior goalkeeper Eric Nelson.

But the Hilltoppers lost key pieces on the back line in All-Area first-teamer Cullen Hoppel, Sean Greco, exchange student Yu Yamahara and Jacob Parobek, who often played in a deep midfield role.

Last season’s All-Area Coach of the Year Matt Hamilton left Lawton’s Hill after seeing great success in his first season and is currently coaching in Florida. In his place is Paul Datte, who knows his way around the program after assisting for three years.

Williams Valley, always a player in the playoff race, has to make up for the loss of all-around field commander Steven Hill, but returning Peppe Mini will certainly help the offense.

Mini scored 17 goals and had nine assists last year, earning an All-Area first-team nod. Other key returnees for coach Seth Shuey are Willy Girard in goal, Collin Schwak, Bryan Drum and Jason Troutman in the midfield and fullback Colten Rebuck.

Ian Blyth takes over at Tri-Valley after a couple seasons in charge of Tamaqua. The Dawgs are known for their physicality, and that should only intensify with Blyth at the helm. Though last year’s big senior class is gone, Tri-Valley will still present challenges to the top teams in the division.

Weatherly is also under new direction as Phil Desrosiers takes charge of the Wreckers. Weatherly and Lourdes could pick a win off each other in league play and steal a non-league win here and there.

Berks League

Hamburg has an astonishing 38 kids out this season, 26 of whom are sophomores or freshmen. But don’t let that number fool you. The Hawks got a handful of young players varsity experience last year.

Two sophomores in particular will contribute regularly in the midfield in Jacob Bausher and Alex MacDonald. The duo will be counted on to put more goals in the net with senior forward Zach Loeb after Hamburg had just 18 total goals a year ago.

Senior goalie Logan Adams is also back for the Hawks and senior Zach Lugo and sophomore Bryce Berger will anchor the defense. Look for the Hawks to compete for a District 3 playoff spot if their sophomores mature quickly.

Tri-Valley League

Also looking for a District 3 playoff spot is Upper Dauphin, which brings back a healthy balance.

Defender Travis Deitrich and holding midfielder Calen Reigner will co-captain the side as seniors, while senior attacking midfielder Jordan Gessner and junior forward Mason Stoneroad represent much of the Trojans’ scoring from last year. Senior forward Cameron Crum is expected to produce more goals this season, as well.

Playing in a tough league doesn’t help Upper Dauphin’s playoff aspirations, but the Trojans should surpass last season’s win total of five and at least join the playoff discussion.
