The 2014 cross country season went pretty much the way most people expected.
• Schuylkill League individual champion Johnathan Condly led Jim Thorpe to back-to-back league titles. Condly also became a two-time individual league champion.
• On the girls’ side, Blue Mountain’s superior grouping and depth propelled the Eagles to a second straight Schuylkill League title.
• And freshman phenom Tina Capparell of Marian lived up to the hype, capturing her first Schuylkill League and District 11 Class A gold medals and a PIAA medal by placing 16th at states.
“She got her first taste of states last year,’’ Marian coach Jeremy Dormer said. “We’re hoping to improve on that 16th place.’’
In all, 16 local runners made it to Hershey for the PIAA Cross Country Championships. Jim Thorpe qualified as a team, while nine other individuals earned trips as well.
The good news is that 13 of those 16 return this season. Joining them are a slew of up-and-coming runners who should factor into much tighter team races in the divisions and overall in the league.
We’ll take a closer look at those races in a moment.
At the front, Tina Capparell remains the girls’ runner to beat. One of her closest competitors may be her younger sister, Nicole, a freshman at Marian. Another is Jim Thorpe sophomore Kayley Kovac, a third-place finisher at leagues last season.
On the boys’ side, Condly’s graduation creates an opportunity for another runner to stake his claim as the league’s best. Ones to watch include Jim Thorpe senior Dylan Bucior (second at leagues last season) and Lehighton junior Michael Blacketter (fourth). They’re both returning state qualifiers as well.
Let’s take a closer look at the divisional races:
Boys
For the past two years, Division I has belonged to Jim Thorpe. The last time the Olympians lost a league meet was Sept. 5, 2012, to eventual league champion Pottsville.
Jim Thorpe’s senior class enters this season with a career record of 32-1.
The Olympians also enter it with a different makeup than the one that qualified for states the past two seasons. Gone is undisputed No. 1 and state medalist Condly, now a freshman runner at Temple University.
No. 3 runner Jake Saxon and No. 7 Nathan Fields also graduated.
The Olympians’ roster, though, is far from bare. District 11 Class AA third-place finisher Bucior is an established ace, while junior Ben Saxon, senior Jian Gentile and sophomore Chris Valdez provide experienced support.
“Losing the No. 1 and No. 3 runners in the Schuylkill League is really tough,’’ Jim Thorpe coach Drew Benyo said. “But having the No. 2 in the league in Dylan and the No. 9 in Ben give us a very positive outlook.’’
A team on the rise is North Schuylkill, which returns its entire seven starters from a squad that finished second at leagues last season. Chris McCormick (eighth at leagues) is one of four junior starters. The other three are sophomores.
Watch for Lehighton to make a move as well. Blacketter gives the Indians a legitimate front-runner among six returning starters. If the back end of their lineup tightens the grouping, Lehighton could be hard to handle.
“It will be a competitive season. The teams in the Schuylkill League are very talented,’’ Lehighton coach Erica Pagotto said. “Our cross country team is growing each year. The experienced runners welcome the newcomers and push them to do their best.”
With five returning starters, add Blue Mountain to the list of contenders. Senior Cameron Greenawalt placed 10th at leagues last season.
The Eagles also welcome the return of senior Derek Mosteller, who missed all of last season as he recovered from serious injuries. Mosteller was a state qualifier as a sophomore.
With six returning starters, Tamaqua could be improved as well.
Pottsville, Pine Grove and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech are all in rebuilding modes.
In Division II, defending champion Mahanoy Area, Marian, Minersville and Schuylkill Haven ran competitively with each other at the end of last season.
Coming in, a pair of state qualifiers in senior Adam Bahrey and junior Matt Derr give the Golden Bears the edge. They return their top five runners, and natural improvement with a year of experience could move Mahanoy Area up the league standings.
Marian returns its top six runners from last year’s team that lost only to Mahanoy Area in league action and finished two places above the Bears (seventh) at leagues. Mahanoy Area rebounded to finish a Schuylkill League Class A boys’-best third at districts.
Schuylkill Haven graduated its top runner, state qualifier Sam Brennan, while Minersville graduated four starters.
Girls
Blue Mountain has ruled the Schuylkill League for the past two seasons, going 21-0 overall and 13-0 in Division I during that span.
The Eagles displayed their dominance at last year’s league meet by placing five runners among the top 15 for 41 points. Tamaqua finished second with 113.
Only eighth-place finisher Sarah Brooks graduated from that group. Seniors Caroline Rickard (fourth), Katie Thompson (sixth), Shannon Henninger (ninth) and Courtney Dukmen and junior Gabby Krause have been major parts of that success.
Three-peating won’t be easy as Tamaqua has loaded up to close the gap.
The Blue Raiders return their top seven runners from last season, led by junior Nichole Wasserleben (fifth at leagues) and sophomore Kailee Carroll (seventh).
Joining the team is junior Monika Shimko, a track star in the 800 meters and relays.
Also coming on board are four members of last season’s junior high championship team. At the front is freshman Sarah Maue, who placed second individually.
“We’re working hard to challenge with the best in the league and district,’’ Tamaqua coach Tom Kanger said. “The girls worked very hard during our two-a-days and are motivated to run in our top seven. Strong leadership is providing good motivation.’’
A team to watch is Jim Thorpe, which has Kayley Kovac and adds junior Delana Nalesnik, who ran for Panther Valley last season and placed 14th at leagues.
“If it all comes together as we hope, the girls could very well be one of the top three in our division,’’ Benyo said.
Pine Grove junior McKayla Lally was a state qualifier last season but the team is still in a rebuilding phase. Lally placed second to Tina Capparell at districts last season.
Division II contains four girls who qualified for states last season. In addition to Tina Capparell, Mahanoy Area sophomore Megan Babinsky, Minersville sophomore Kaylene Raczka and Shenandoah Valley junior Carly Teaschenko made it to Hershey.
With Babinsky, sophomore Megan Bisco and senior Laura Bisco, the Bears should be among the top tier of the division again.
Marian has the two Capparells but needs other girls to step forward to improve team success. Minersville has five starters back, with Raczka and junior Autumn Pedron leading the way.
The team with the best Nos. 3-5 runners will likely win the division.
“We’re excited with all the work they put in over the summer and are excited to see what they can do this season,’’ Dormer said. “We want to improve, make a good run at the division and go from there.’’
