LEHIGHTON — Wyatt Clements and Tyler Cann are two of the Lehighton football players expected to lead the Indians to an Anthracite League championship.
After Friday’s first game, the two confirmed that idea.
Clements ran for three touchdowns and Cann added two touchdown carries as the Indians rolled to a 40-6 victory over Mahanoy Area.
The Indians romped to a 33-0 halftime lead as Clements and Cann each scored two touchdown runs while Mike Mayernik added another.

Cann ran for 93 yards and threw for 73 more.
Mahanoy Area was paced by Lenny Dulsky, who ran 43 yards for the Golden Bears’ lone score.

Shamokin 28
Line Mountain 7
MANDATA — The final score says that Shamokin beat Line Mountain by three touchdowns in a non-league contest, and that’s all that matters to either team in the season opener.
But the fact is the Indians needed a big defensive series late in the fourth quarter to keep the Eagles from tying the game, then got two late touchdowns from Preston Burns to deliver the final scoring margin.
Burns carried the ball 22 times for 220 yards and scored on runs of 52, 46 and 25 yards. His final two scores came after Shamokin’s defense stopped Line Mountain on downs following a 46-yard run to the Indians’ 4-yard line by the Eagles’ Kenny Boyer, who carried the ball 38 times for 205 yards and a touchdown.
Boyer carried on the first two plays of the series for zero yards before quarterback Kurt Mace threw two incompletions. The second went to the end zone but was knocked down by the Indians’ Jacob DiRienzo.
Burns immediately gave Shamokin some breathing room with a 19-yard run to the 23, and Devin Pietkiewicz and freshman Mark Wetzel ran for first downs before Burns burst up the middle untouched for a 46-yard touchdown with 3:16 remaining in the game to give the Indians insurance.
The Indians then held Line Mountain on four downs again and Burns repeated the play, this time from the 25 with 2:46 left to seal the win.
