SELINSGROVE — Mount Carmel might not have beaten Selinsgrove on Friday night, but the Red Tornadoes sent the rest of the area a powerful message.

They are not to be taken lightly.

The Red Tornadoes played tooth and nail with Selinsgrove for four quarters before the Seals rallied for two touchdowns and a 14-7 win at Harold O. Bolig Memorial Stadium.

“I don’t think anybody would have thought this score would be 14-7,” Mount Carmel coach John Darrah said. “But I don’t want the kids to be happy. I don’t believe in moral victories. The fact is we’re 0-2. I want us to learn from this game.

In the fourth period, Kyle Karycki’s 75-yard touchdown run came on the first play after the Red Tornadoes held the Seals on downs.

After the touchdown, Selinsgrove sophomore quarterback Logan Leiby went to work. Leiby connected with Hoke on a slant route over the middle for a 29-yard touchdown, and Joe Radel’s extra point tied the game with 4:55 left.

Leiby then connected with sophomore Anthony Dressler, for a 12-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1:56 left.

Shamokin 21 (OT)

MILL HALL — While a 22-yard field goal in overtime by Central Mountain’s Austyn Carson was what ultimately beat Shamokin, it’s the missed opportunities that will haunt the Indians.

On several occasions Shamokin thought had this game in its grasp — when it was up 14-0 to start the game, and then when it had a touchdown lead with just seven seconds remaining in regulation. But Central Mountain answered each time.

Preston Burns finished with 137 yards on the ground for Shamokin, which plays Southern Columbia next week.
