High school cross country roundup for Sept. 23, 2015

PINE GROVE — With improved depth and an influx of talent, Tamaqua has its sights set on making a run at the Schuylkill League Division I championship.

The Blue Raiders took two steps toward that goal Wednesday afternoon.

Kailee Carroll won in 21:57 as Tamaqua finished with four of the top five runners to beat North Schuylkill 15-46 and Pine Grove 19-44 in a Division I tri-meet.

Melanie Shimko, Monica Shimko and Sarah Maue went 3-4-5 for the Blue Raiders (6-0, 2-0 D-I).

Chloe Stravinsky finished seventh overall, giving the Spartans a 26-29 win over the Cardinals.

Christina DiFalco led Pine Grove, placing second in 22:17.

Bears outlast Miners, Hurricanes

MAHANOY CITY — Megan Babinsky finished first in 23:25, and Megan Bisco placed fourth as Mahanoy Area edged Minersville 26-30 and Schuylkill Haven 19-39 in a Division II tri-meet.

Kaylene Raczka placed second in 23:47 to lead the Miners to a 19-36 win over the Hurricanes. Autumn Pedron finished third, and Olivia Cory came in fifth for Minersville.

Lexi Pascucci led Schuylkill Haven, placing sixth in 26:09.

WEATHERLY — Tina Capparell finished first in 20:57, and Nicole Capparell came in second as Marian edged Shenandoah Valley 28-29 and Weatherly 22-35 in a Division II tri-meet.

Carly Teaschenko placed third overall in 22:47 for the Blue Devils, who beat Weatherly 18-37. Alexis Luna and Emily Demalis finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Megan Peifer led Weatherly, coming in ninth with a time of 27:57.

Indians top Rams, Green Wave

LEHIGHTON — Cera Gaston won the race in 22:44 to lead Lehighton past Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 15-50 in a Division I meet and Nativity 15-50 for a non-league win.

The Indians finished with the top five runners as Piper DeMatte, Jonique Pace, Alyssa Smith and Sarah Laible followed Gaston.

Rachel Greising finished sixth overall, leading the Rams with a time of 28:42.

Amy Jo West led the Green Wave with an 11th-place finish in 33:17.

PINE GROVE — Chris McCormick took the top spot with a time of 18:06 as North Schuylkill placed four runners in the top five, defeating Tamaqua 20-41 and Pine Grove 15-50 in a Division I tri-meet.

Matt McCormick, Austin Roseberry and Lenny Bolinsky finished 3-4-5 for the Spartans.

Adam Melnick placed second in 18:22, leading the Blue Raiders to a 15-50 win over the Cardinals.

Ivan Wissinger led Pine Grove with a seventh-place finish in 19:28.

MAHANOY CITY — Adam Bahrey, Seth Soriano and Matt Derr finished 1-2-3 to lead Mahanoy Area past Minersville 20-37 and Schuylkill Haven 17-43 for a Division II sweep.

Bahrey won the race in 18:48.

Samuel DiBiase placed fourth in 20:22, while Simon Wagner finished fifth to lead the Miners over the Hurricanes 22-37.

Cole Jewett led Schuylkill Haven with a seventh-place finish in 21:26.

WEATHERLY — Aaron Srinivasan placed second in 19:59, and Eddie Pulaski came in fourth as Marian beat Weatherly 27-30 and Shenandoah Valley 23-34 in a Division II tri-meet.

Jared Hinkle won the race in a course-record 19:21, and Joel Hinkle finished third for the Wreckers, who edged the Blue Devils 27-28.

Josh White led Shenandoah Valley with a fifth-place finish in 20:29.

LEHIGHTON — Michael Blacketter finished first in 18:25 as Lehighton took the top five spots to beat Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 15-48 in a Division I meet and Nativity 15-50 in a non-league meet.

Trent Frey, Anthony Tavella, Blade McCabe and Pengcheng Zhang rounded out the top five for the Indians.

Jordan Heintz led the Rams with a sixth-place finish in 20:13, topping the Green Wave 15-50 for a non-league win.

Brett Rushannon finished eighth overall, leading Nativity’s runners in 20:46.
