Schlitzer makes 1st pro start

in Surrey victory

GUILDFORD, Surrey — Pottsville High and Philadelphia University graduate Nick Schlitzer made his first professional start Friday and scored six points as the Surrey Scorchers pulled out an 84-83 win over the Manchester Giants in a British Basketball League game at Surrey Sports Park.

Schlitzer played 20:34 minutes and was 3-of-8 shooting. He also grabbed four rebounds.

Desmond Lee hit two free throws with 8 seconds left in the game to give the Scorchers (2-1) the lead for good. Andreas Schreiber led Surrey with a game-high 22 points. He also had 11 rebounds.

Surrey’s next game is Friday, Oct. 9, at Leeds Force.

Tamaqua girls 6th at Paul Short

BETHLEHEM — Led by Sarah Maue’s 27th-place finish in 20:37, Tamaqua placed sixth in a field of 39 teams Friday in the Paul Short Girls’ White Race at Lehigh University.

The Blue Raiders finished with 241 points. Stroudsburg won with 103.

In a field of 322 runners, Kailee Carroll (36th in 20:49), Nicole Wasserleben (44th in 21:00), Chelsea Frantz (61st in 21:21) and Monika Shimko (90th in 21:59) also scored for the Blue Raiders.
