SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — After she scored 48 points in her past two games, Penn State Schuylkill head coach Charlie Killian was looking for one more strong offensive game from Coleen Druby before the semester break.
He got enough from her — and her teammates as well.
Her 10 points were enough to lift PSU-Schuylkill’s women to a 57-38 victory over Penn State Worthington Scranton in a Penn State University Athletic Conference game Tuesday night.
The victory preceded the Penn State Schuylkill men’s thrilling 93-89 victory in overtime over PSU-Worthington Scranton in another PSUAC game.
Druby’s 10 points in the women’s game marks her third straight double-digit performance.
“This year, I’m playing a guard-forward. Last year, I was playing forward and I kept telling the coaches (I’m not one),” she said. “I want to score.”
She scored eight points in the opening half, including two 3-pointers as PSU-Schuylkill turned a 9-3 lead after one 10-minute quarter into a 26-14 halftime edge.
PSU-Worthington Scranton, which fielded just six players, never got any closer as Tessa Dolce scored 11 of her team-best 15 points in the second half. Dolce also led the Lady Lions with nine rebounds.
Caitria Bowen added 14 points, eight in the second half, for Penn State Schuylkill (4-2, 2-2 PSUAC).
“All year long, we’re going to be defense first,” Killian said of his team. “We struggled shooting the ball in the first half. The second half, we got a little bit better.”
Hurt by 26 turnovers, Penn State Worthington Scranton (1-6, 0-3) was paced by Katie Hart, who scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
In the men’s game, Penn State Worthington Scranton again proved to be just the opponent that head coach Travis Williams’ Lions needed.
Last year, PSU-Schuylkill scored an 82-72 overtime win for its first victory of the season.
Tuesday night, the Lions (3-6, 1-3) used the same rival to earn their first PSUAC win of the season, again in overtime.
“It was a test of the last three games because we were basically in the same situation in the last three games,” Williams said. “Maybe experience starting taking its toll on us and we started using our head at the end of the game.”
PSU-Worthington Scranton’s Kyle Kelly, who led his team with 25 points, sank two foul shots with 25 seconds left to tie the game at 81 after regulation.
After a trade of baskets to open overtime, PSU-Schuylkill’s William Bracey hit a short, driving bank shot to put the Lions ahead to stay at 85-83.
By then, Bracey was playing with a bandaged upper lip and a replacement jersey after he was struck on the mouth with 4:55 left in regulation, leaving his uniform bloodied.
“He looked like a brand new player coming in. New player and a new attitude. He was unstoppable,” Williams said.
Freshman Blake Thompson also stepped up in the extra period. He posted a steal and assist to Nick Jacoby for one basket, scored off a pass from Jacoby for another and sank two free throws with 8 seconds remaining.
“He sometimes looks nonchalant out there, but he’s very athletic, very explosive,” Williams said.
Derek Dimond led PSU-Schuylkill with 28 points while Jacoby added 21. Nate Yost had 16, Thompson posted 13 and Bracey had 10.
PSU-Worthington Scranton (3-6, 1-2) got 22 points from Rocco Cordaro, 12 points from Hasiin Dixon, 11 from Javon Dickson and 10 from Cullen Fanning.
PSU-Schuylkill’s teams will not play again until Jan. 13 at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
“I think we need to heal up a little bit. We’re a little banged up as a team,” Williams said.
