PINE GROVE — Marian’s girls’ volleyball team began the 2015 season with a new setter, but with the same high hopes as always.
With the announcement by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association of its Class A All-State Team on Thursday, the reasoning was justified.
Four Schuylkill League players, including three from Marian, were named to the team.
The Fillies, who advanced to the PIAA Class A semifinals this fall, are represented by seniors Maureen Kloap and Abigail Stankiewitch and sophomore Jasmine Mooney.
Nativity’s Jocelyn Holobetz also was named to the list of 35 All-State players.
The All-State honor is the third in a row for Stankiewitch, a 6-foot middle hitter who led Marian this season to a 20-3 record that included the program’s third straight Schuylkill League and fourth consecutive District 11 Class A championships.
For the 2015 season, Stankiewitch, who finished her career with 923 kills, had 336 kills with a hitting percentage of .349. She added 44 service aces, 68 blocks, 71 digs and nine assists.
Although she helped Marian to a state championship in 2013 and the state title match in 2014, Marian head coach John Fallabel said, “Her freshman year was loaded with inconsistency and she got better as she got along. This year was her finest year.”
Kloap, named to the All-State team in 2014 when she helped Marian to the PIAA Class A title match, earned her second straight selection.
With a knack of performing her best in big matches, the 5-8 outside hitter posted 239 kills along with 295 digs, 14 assists, 14 blocks and 69 aces. In her career, Kloap posted 587 kills and 700 career digs.
Mooney was the lone sophomore on the All-State roster and earned her first nod.
“Jasmine Mooney can play any position on the volleyball court,” Fallabel said. “She can be an outside hitter, middle hitter, setter, libero. You name it, she can do it, so the problem was deciding where to best utilize her in the given situation.”
Fallabel settled on the outside hitter position and Mooney delivered from there.
Hitting .222, the 5-11 Mooney produced 244 kills and 243 digs in 2015. She added 11 assists, 38 blocks and 89 service aces.
Holobetz, a 5-10 outside hitter, represents the Schuylkill League Division IV champion Green Wave. Placing second in the District 11 Class A Tournament to the Fillies, Nativity posted a 17-4 mark that included three losses to Marian.
Earning her second straight All-State honor, Holobetz posted 362 kills in her senior season to finish with 1,087 kills in her four-year career.
“It definitely means a lot because it means my hard work has paid off, but I definitely wouldn’t have done what I did without my team,” she said Thursday.
Holobetz also had 191 digs, 58 service aces, 19 assists and 10 blocks in her final season.
PIAA Class A champion Bishop Canevin and runner-up North Star, which beat Marian in the semifinals, led the All-State squad with four selections each.
Marian and District 6 champion Purchase Line each placed three on the squad.
