Local hoops wrap for Dec. 10, 2015

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Blue Mountain started the Schuylkill League girls’ basketball season with a bang.

Abby Fanelli hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles rally past North Schuylkill for a 45-43 Schuylkill League Division I victory on Thursday night.

Julia Kutz scored off a steal with 1:12 to play to put Blue Mountain up by one, a lead it saw through to the end.

Fanelli finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kutz registered a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds. Angelica Kaledas chipped in eight points for the Eagles.

Tiff Lapotsky led North Schuylkill with 15 points, while Waverly Snyder added in 11. The loss is North Schuylkill’s first in the division since a 48-35 defeat to Pine Grove on Feb. 4, 2013.

MINERSVILLE — Maggie Wigoda netted a career-high 18 points as Minersville opened defense of its Division II title by routing the Vikings at Thomas Fitzpatrick Gym.

The Battlin’ Miners produced a balanced effort on both ends of the floor, outscoring the Vikings 40-15 in the middle quarters.

Adrienne Kroznuskie was the only other player in double figures for Minersville.

Rayanne Hawk scored 12 points to lead Williams Valley.

SHENANDOAH — Savanna Krusinsky and Brenna Karnish tallied 15 points apiece as the Fillies rolled to a Division III victory over the Blue Devils.

Marian used its full-court pressure in the second quarter to build a 35-7 halftime advantage. In all, the Fillies forced 21 turnovers by Shenandoah Valley, which was led in scoring by Marcella Creasy’s nine points.

Megan Bisco finished with 12 points, Laura Bisco added 11 and Byrne totaled 10, while Kiera Van Horn pulled down eight rebounds and Madison Cavenas collected seven boards.

For Schuylkill Haven, Amanda Farr made five 3-pointers for a team-high 15 points.

Tulpehocken’s Trent Johnson scored 19 points to lead all scorers.

Kevan Gentile (113), Dalton Freer (145) and Ryan O’Rourke (285) picked up pins for Jim Thorpe (0-7), which also got bonus points via major decision by Jarrin Geisinger (160) and an upset by Robbie Geisinger at 182.
