Fillies' Boyle tops D-11 'A' all-star squad

The postseason honors keep rolling in for the Marian girls' volleyball team.

The PIAA Class A state champion Fillies placed four players on the District 11 Class A all-star team, including Player of the Year Grace Boyle.

Boyle, a senior outside hitter, had eight kills in the Fillies' 3-0 win over Cochranton that gave Marian its first PIAA Class A championship since 2003. She had been earlier named the Schuylkill League Division IV Player of the Year and selected to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class A All-State team.

Teammates joining Boyle on the District 11 Class A first team are junior setter Abby O'Donnell, junior right-side hitter Emily Pilla and sophomore middle hitter Abby Stankiewitch. Two other Fillies - junior libero Lauren Nietz and sophomore outside hitter Maureen Kloap - were selected to the District 11 Class A second team.

In addition to the Marian girls, the Class A first team featured three from District 11 runner-up Nativity - senior setter-outside hitter Emily Field, senior libero Jessica Jones and sophomore setter-outside hitter Jocelyn Holobetz - and Tri-Valley senior outside hitter Jordan Schwalm.

The District 11 Class A second team featured Nietz and Kloap from Marian, Nativity senior middle hitter Tara Ketterer, senior right-side hitter Katie Rabuck and sophomore middle hitter Maddison Deibert from Tri-Valley, Minersville sophomore libero Meg Schwalm, and Salem Christian junior middle hitter Morgan Barnes.

In Class AAA, Blue Mountain junior outside hitter Brittney Moyer was a second-team selection.

The District 11 Class AAA first team consisted of two players each from Allentown Central Catholic, Bethlehem Catholic and Notre Dame-Green Pond.

Two more players each from Allentown Central Catholic and Bethlehem and one from Lehighton joined Moyer on the second team.

H.S. Wrestling Panthers place 3 at Penn Manor

MILLERSVILLE - Rian Schubeck, Len Ogozalek and Dylan Moyer were placewinners for Panther Valley in the 25-team Penn Manor Wrestling Tournament held Friday and Saturday.

Schubeck placed fifth at 220, going 4-2 in the tournament. Schubeck reached the quarterfinals before getting pinned by Andrew Boob of Selinsgrove, then went 3-1 in the consolation bracket. He major decisioned Zeb Pfeiffer of Penn Manor 10-2 in the fifth-place bout.

Ogozalek finished fifth at 120, following a similar pattern to Schubeck. He decisioned Greg Pascale of Abington Heights 3-1 in the fifth-place bout.

Moyer reached the quarterfinals at 182 before falling 8-6 to Cody Lind of West Chester Henderson and eventually finished seventh.

Panther Valley ended 23rd in the team standings with 50 points. Solanco (199) won the team title, followed by Bethlehem Liberty (190.5), Garden Spot (169.5), Cape Henlopen (153.5) and Washington (135).

Wintry weather wipes out Saturday's local sports slate

Saturday's snowstorm and mix of wintry weather postponed 18 local events.
