Cardinals 'Edge' out Donegal in Classic

PINE GROVE - When Pine Grove needed some extra scoring Friday against Donegal at the Cardinal Classic, Morgan Edge delivered.

The sophomore poured in a career-high 21 points to lead Pine Grove to a 50-44, comeback victory at the Cards' own tournament.

Donegal opened the game with a 13-1 run and led 20-9 after the first quarter.

The Cardinals, though, responded with a 23-8 second quarter. Edge netted 12 points, helping Pine Grove lead 32-28 at halftime.

Becky Evans added 16 points and 12 assists for Pine Grove, which will face Blue Mountain today at 6 p.m. for the championship.

Blue Mountain defeated Minersville 53-48 in the other game of the tournament. Details from the game were not available.

North Schuylkill 39 Kennett 27

STATE COLLEGE - Justine Paul had eight points and 12 rebounds to lead the Spartans to a victory over the Blue Demons in the opening round of the State College Kiwanis Christmas Tournament.

Lauren Damiter also had eight points for North Schuylkill while Nina Marone added seven for the Spartans, who held a 20-11 scoring advantage in the second and third quarters to take a 28-18 lead.

Nadya Spotts and Marone helped ice the game for the North Schuylkill in the fourth, as both went 3-for-4 from the line.

The Spartans faces Burrell, which defeated State College 47-43, in the championship game today at 4 p.m.

Hamburg 41 Shamokin 29

COAL TOWNSHIP - Hannah Schoenly scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Hamburg into the championship of the Knights of Columbus Tournament, hosted by Shamokin High School.

Kassidy Lesher added 14 points for the Hawks, who used a 16-3 scoring edge at the foul line for the difference in the outcome. Hamburg will play in the championship game against Southern Columbia at 6 p.m. today.

Shamokin was paced by Catie Pancher's nine points.

Southern Columbia 47 Lourdes 41

COAL TOWNSHIP - Carmella Bickel drained a game-high 17 points, but the Red Raiders fell to the Tigers in the Knights of Columbus Tournament.

Lourdes outscored Southern Columbia 31-20 in the middle quarters.

Lourdes will take on Shamokin at 3 p.m. today in the consolation game.

Williams Valley 51 Upper Dauphin 12

HEGINS - Cassidy Pinchorski netted a game-high 12 points as the Vikings upended the Trojans in the semifinals of the WQLV Holiday Tournament.

Pinchorski scored eight of Williams Valley's 16 points in the second quarter. Kate Whelski also dropped six of her 11 total points in the second quarter.

Laura Sweger managed six points for Upper Dauphin.

Tri-Valley 64 Millerburg 13

HEGINS - Brittany Smeltz and Brianna Wiscount racked up 15 points apiece as the Dawgs routed Millersville in the WQLV Tournament.

Tri-Valley scored 41 points in the middle quarters. Katie Dietrich also tallied double digits with 11 points.

The Bulldogs will take on Williams Valley in the championship today at 6 p.m. at Tri-Valley High School.

Schuylkill Haven 46 Weatherly 37

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Freshman guard Alicia Gerber scored 12 points and junior guard Emma Schweigert added 11 as Schuylkill Haven kept Weatherly winless with a nine-point victory.

Despite shooting 2-for-11 from the foul line in the game, Schuylkill Haven took a 15-6 lead after one period and led by nine after three periods en route to the win.

Weatherly was paced by eight points from junior Jessica Polchin.

Jim Thorpe 45 Northern Lehigh 40

LEHIGHTON - Nikki Ennis scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers, as Jim Thorpe beat Northern Lehigh in the consolation game of the Lehighton Tournament.

Rebecca Cressman scored 11 points for the Olympians as they earned their first victory of the season.
