Miners hold off Devils

SHENANDOAH - Reighly Melochick scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Minersville overcame an early deficit and held on for a 58-53 Schuylkill League Division II-III girls' basketball crossover victory over Shenandoah Valley on Wednesday.

Down 27-23 at halftime, the Miners went to a full-court press in the third quarter to go on a 21-10 run and take a 44-37 lead at the end the third. The Blue Devils cut the deficit to two points in the fourth but couldn't tie the game as Melochick went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the quarter to seal the win.

Freshman Emily Mealey added 17 points for Minersville.

Abigail Snizter had 20 points for the Blue Devils, knocking down six 3-pointers in the game. Snizter scored 11 points in the first quarter as Shenandoah Valley got out to a 16-9 lead.

Kristina Nieddu added 13 points for the Blue Devils.

Nativity 61 Williams Valley 22

Emily Field and Allison Warren had 12 points apiece as the Golden Girls' defense shut down the Vikings in a Division II-III crossover rout.

Field scored 10 of her points in the first half as Nativity jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and a 31-5 advantage at halftime.

Olivia Andrefski (11) and Keegan White (10) also hit in double figures for the Golden Girls, who won their eighth consecutive game.

Kate Whelski had eight points to lead Williams Valley.

Mahanoy Area 45 Schuylkill Haven 18

MAHANOY CITY - Macey Brown poured in a game-high 21 points as the Golden Bears used a big third quarter to pull away form the Hurricanes in a Division II-III crossover contest.

Mahanoy Area led 17-15 at halftime but outscored Schuylkill Haven 28-3 in the second half, including a 22-1 scoring advantage in the third quarter, to snap a five-game losing streak.

Boys' basketball Williams Valley 62 Marian 46

TOWER CITY - Stephen Sedesse had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, along with three blocks, to lead the Vikings to a Division II-III crossover win over the Colts.

Ben Rautzahn added 13 points and six assists for Williams Valley, while Nick Rodichok contributed 13 points. Williams Valley took a 35-22 halftime lead to take command.

Mike Verchusky led Marian with 15 points, while John Woitko added 13.

Upper Dauphin 53 Lanc. Country Day 43

LANCASTER - Matthew Miller scored a game-high 20 points and Mac Ney added 17 as the Trojans pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Cougars in a Tri-Valley League contest.

The game was tied 33-all entering the fourth, but Upper Dauphin held a 20-10 scoring advantage in the quarter get the victory and snap a five-game losing streak.

4 games wiped out by winter weather

There were four area high school basketball games postponed Wednesday due to the weather:

- North Schuylkill at Panther Valley girls - Wednesday, Jan. 29, 7:30 p.m.

- Moravian Academy at Marian girls - TBA

- Oley Valley at Blue Mountain girls - Saturday, Feb. 1, 6 p.m. (varsity only)

- Hamburg at Oley Valley boys - Wednesday, Jan. 29, 7:30 p.m.
