State champion teams honored 'Red out' game set at Pine Grove Mount Carmel hosts event for cancer research Big Diamond plans incentives

MAHANOY CITY - Three Mahanoy Area girls' basketball teams that won PIAA championships will be recognized during the school's girls' basketball game today.

The state title teams from 1988-89 and 1998 will be honored during the 6 p.m. junior varsity-varsity doubleheader against Weatherly.

PINE GROVE - The Pine Grove Area Varsity Club will conduct a "red out" game Tuesday for Pine Grove's girls' basketball game against North Schuylkill on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Proceeds from donations taken at the door will be sent to the American Heart Association.

All fans are encouraged to wear red clothing to support those living with heart-related conditions.

MOUNT CARMEL - The Coaches for Cancer Basketball Classic will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Carmel Area High School.

The Red Tornadoes will host Southern Columbia, with games set for JV boys at 3 p.m., JV girls at 4:30 p.m., varsity boys at 6 p.m. and varsity girls at 7:30 p.m.

Both teams will wear blue shirts to promote cancer awareness. Several fundraisers are planned for the American Cancer Society.

The Mount Carmel Area pep band will perform at both varsity games.

FORESTVILLE - Big Diamond Speedway officials have announced purse incentives for competitors in the 2014 schedule.

If the 358 modifieds draw 33 or more cars for a 25-lap feature, the purse will increase to $3,200 for the winner and to $275 for cars taking the green flag.

Likewise, increases to $1,200 and $150, respectively, will occur for the 358 late models, $1,000 and $125, respectively, for the sportsmen and $400 and $40 for the roadrunners if 33 or more cars appear for regular programs.

The track will open its 2014 schedule Sunday, March 30.
