ANNVILLE - The Lebanon Valley College women's basketball team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Women's Division III Tournament it was announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday afternoon.
Nativity grad Kiely Chaklos starts at guard for the Commonwealth Conference runner-up Dutchmen (21-6), who will travel to York and face Baldwin Wallace (20-6) in the opening round of the 64-team tournament Friday. Baldwin Wallace is the Ohio Athletic Conference runner-up.
York (25-2), the Capital Athletic Conference champion, faces La Roche (23-4) in the other game of that sectional Friday. The winners square off Saturday for the right to advance to the Sweet 16.
Other Pennsylvania teams to qualify for the women's Division III tournament were Moravian (20-7), Scranton (24-3) and Messiah (20-7). Pine Grove graduate Shannon Zimmerman is a freshman center for Moravian, which faces Cabrini in the first round at Montclair State.
On the men's side, Pennsylvania teams Dickinson (21-6), Penn State Behrend (23-4), Scranton (24-3), DeSales (18-9) and Alvernia (20-7) earned NCAA berths. For complete Division III brackets, visit www.d3hoops.com.
Soccer players from five Schuylkill League schools were among those honored at the annual Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar-Athlete Banquet in January at the Northampton Memorial Community Center.
The top male and female soccer scholar-athlete from each school was recognized, with an overall winner chosen. The top scholar-athletes were Leigham Breckenridge of Northwestern Lehigh and Abigail Kohler of Southern Lehigh.
Representing Schuylkill League schools were Catherine Condly and Steven Principe, Jim Thorpe; Grace Kimmel and Joshua Buehl, Nativity; Gabriella Bentz, Pottsville; Adam Seltzer, Schuylkill Haven; and Rachel Moon and Adam Capone, Weatherly.
