Lions notch 1st victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Penn State Schuylkill's baseball team scored its first victory of the season Thursday as an eight-run rally helped the Lions to a 10-2 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.

After dropping its first three games of its spring break trip to South Carolina, Penn State Schuylkill erased a 2-1 deficit with eight runs in the fifth inning.

Ryan Boyer's home run highlighted the outburst. Boyer finished with two hits, two runs and four RBIs.

The Lions posted nine hits, including two each by Bryan Dimon and Chris Kreider, who doubled and had two RBIs. Ryan King doubled while he, Jordan Blankenhorn and Boyer each scored two runs. The winners benefited from eight walks and three batters who were hit by pitches.

Kreider also pitched a seven-inning complete game and allowed two runs and five hits. He struck out nine and walked three.

Penn State Schuylkill ends its spring break trip with a game today against Ursinus.

Schuylkill soccer scholars honored

The Schuylkill County Youth Soccer Association will sponsor the 23rd Annual SCYSA Scholar-Athlete Banquet on Saturday, March 15, at the Community Fire Company in Landingville.

Doors open at 4 p.m., with dinner starting at 5 p.m.

The banquet is held annually to recognize the top male and female soccer scholar-athletes from the area's high schools. Area All-State players will also be recognized. The guest speaker will be Alvernia girls' soccer head coach Bill Bonewitz.

The U-13 and U-15 girls' and boys' champions will be presented with their individual championship trophies.

The following scholar-athletes will be recognized:

Blue Mountain - Madyson Riegel and Jake Gillespie

Jim Thorpe - Catherine Condly and Steven Principe

Lourdes - Rachel Schultz and Nicholas Taylor

Minersville - Morgen Woodford and Matthew Roberts

Nativity - Grace Kimmel and Joshua Buehl

North Schuylkill - Arielle Zahodnick and Devin Mashack

Pine Grove - Maggie Peters and Nick Cataldo

Pottsville - Gabriella Bentz and Humza Hnesh

Schuylkill Haven - Julia Speciale and Adam Seltzer

Tamaqua - Rachel Jones and Stephen Billet

Tri-Valley - Haley Schwalm and Jonathan Snyder

Weatherly - Courtney Dickson and Josh Reiner

Williams Valley -Mary Radel and Luke Wynn

The following All-State players and coach will be honored: Jake Gillespie and Madyson Riegel, Blue Mountain; Marcus Repella and Shelby Trumbo, Schuylkill Haven; and coach Vanco Georgevic from Schuylkill Haven.
