YORK - Four local swimmers captured gold medals and several others qualified for states at the YMCA Central District Swimming Championships held March 8-9 at the Graham Aquatic Center.
Schuylkill YMCA's Ryan Schreffler, Zack Turnitza and Dylan Schreffler and Hazleton YMCA's Madison Dando won individual championships in the two-day competition.
Dylan Schreffler, 10, won three events in the Cadet Division (ages 10 and under), placing first in the 200-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly. Ryan Schreffler, 12, added two golds, winning the 200 freestyle (1:54.24) and 100 freestyle (51.31) in record times in the Prep Division (ages 11-12), while Turnitza, 12, captured the Prep Division 50 backstroke.
Dando, 10, from Girardville, took top honors in the Cadet Division 50 backstroke with a district-record time of 33.33, then teamed with Rebecca Wagner, Stefany Malaga and Molly Gould to win the girls' 200 freestyle relay. She also placed second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 200 medley relay.
The top six placewinners in each event in each age group qualified for the YMCA State Championships, set for Friday and Saturday at Penn State University's McCoy Natatorium.
Ryan Schreffler will also swim the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay at states, while Turnitza will also compete in the 100 back, 100 fly and 200 freestyle relay. Dylan Schreffler also qualified in the 200 freestyle relay.

Also qualifying for states were Ian Lloyd (200 fly, 100 fly), Natalie Miller (50 back) and Logan Roadcap (50 back) of the Northern Dauphin County YMCA.
At the Eastern District Swimming Championships, Blue Mountain students Maria Lopez and Karrison Dubbs recorded finishes high enough to advance to the state meet.
Lopez qualified in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and two relays in the girls' 9-10 age group, while Dubbs qualified in the 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and two relays in the 11-12-year-old age group. Both girls swim for the Reading YMCA.
