MINERSVILLE - It only takes one hit for a team to get some momentum.

Mason Ulsh delivered that hit Sunday for Schuylkill Haven.

Ulsh hammered a double in the top of the fourth inning to jump start his team to a 6-2 victory over Minersville in a District 24 Little League 11-12-year-old Pool 1 contest.

Ulsh's double triggered a four-run fourth inning that helped Schuylkill Haven (1-0) break open a tight ball game.

"We had multiple runners on base and then we started moving them around," Schuylkill Haven manager B.J. Evans said. "Then, there was a couple big hits. I was proud of the kids."

Schuylkill Haven opened the scoring in the third inning when Albe Evans was hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Jack Higgins.

In the fourth, Gavin Evitts opened the frame with a walk before Ulsh launched his double to center field.

Minersville (0-1) was able to get an out on a fielder's choice before Zakai Webb reached on a bunt single. After an error allowed one run to score, Damyan Miller delivered a two-run single and Higgins added another RBI single to give Schuylkill Haven a 5-0 lead.

The four-run outburst was plenty of cushion for Ulsh, who pitched a complete-game five-hitter.

The right-hander allowed one hit through the first three innings, and took a shutout into the fifth before Minersville got on the scoreboard.

Ulsh finished with five strikeouts and four walks.

"Mason Ulsh pitched tremendously," B.J. Evans said. "That probably is one of the biggest keys to today's win, but it really was a team effort.

"We all played hard."

Stephen Balulis added an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to boost Schuylkill Haven's lead to 6-0 before Minersville finally got to Ulsh.

Roman DiNicola's RBI double in the fifth inning gave Minersville its first run of the game. Cal Schoffstall's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning accounted for the final score.

"Our biggest thing today was we didn't hit and we came in here feeling that was one of our strong points," Minersville manager Scott Schwalm said. "Hats off to Schuylkill Haven, that's a really good team there.

"These kids work hard and we have high hopes for the future."

Schuylkill Haven continues Pool 1 play Tuesday at Line Mountain, while Minersville will travel Thursday to Orwigsburg.

"As long as we keep pitching and playing the field, I think we will be in good shape," B.J. Evans said.
