LOCAL ROUNDUP: Nabholz pitches Tide past Cards

PINE GROVE — Eli Nabholz struck out 11 batters to beat the rain and lead Pottsville to a 4-0, five-inning victory over Pine Grove on Friday in a Schuylkill League Division I game at Stump Stadium.

Travis Blankenhorn tripled and had two RBIs for the Crimson Tide, while Eric Wapinsky added two hits, one a double.

Austin Fick struck out six batters for Pine Grove and had a hit for the Cards.

The two sides were scoreless after three innings before Pottsville tallied three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before the rain fell to put the contest in the books.

The rest of Tuesday’s scheduled Schuylkill League baseball games were postponed by wet weather or poor field conditions.

PINE GROVE — Madison Garland’s two-run single in the fifth inning lifted the Crimson Tide to a victory in the Division I opener for both teams.

The game was called after six innings due to rain that made field conditions unplayable.

Mackenzie Hasenauer went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored to lead Pine Grove. Hasenauer is 6-for-6 in two games this season.

The rest of Tuesday’s scheduled Schuylkill League softball games were postponed by wet weather or poor field conditions.

BIRDSBORO — Kory Kleckner posted four kills for Pottsville in its 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 loss to Daniel Boone in a Berks Section I match.

Kyle Brennan served three aces and Justin Abdo had two kills for Pottsville (0-5, 0-4 Berks I).

Cameron Conkle had nine kills and five digs for Daniel Boone.

Daniel Boone won the JV match in a two-set sweep.

Schuylkill County

Charity Bowl set for April 10 at PSU

The annual Schuylkill County Senior Charity Bowl all-star basketball games will be held Friday, April 10, at Penn State Schuylkill.

The girls’ game will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the boys’ game.

Senior players from Mahanoy Area, Marian, Minersville, North Schuylkill, Panther Valley, Shenandoah Valley and Tamaqua will comprise the North teams, while seniors from Blue Mountain, Nativity, Pine Grove, Pottsville, Schuylkill Haven, Tri-Valley and Williams Valley will represent the South.

The North girls’ team will be coached by Shenandoah Valley’s Chris Conroy and his staff, while the South girls’ squad will be guided by Tri-Valley’s Clark Romberger and his staff.

Tamaqua’s Caszy Kosciolek and his staff will coach the North boys, while Pottsville’s Dave Mullaney and his staff will direct the South boys.

advance to PAWFs

Pottsville hosted its annual Freestyle and Greco-Roman Qualifier on Saturday at Martz Hall.

The top four placewinners in each bracket qualified for the PAWF State Championships to be held May 15-17 at Chambersburg High School. The event included wrestlers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Mason Manville, who won a silver medal at the Youth Olympics last year, also competed. The overall number of competitors was a big increase from last season.

Blue Mountain youth

places 6th in Jersey

Matheson Bair, Orwigsburg, placed sixth out of 118 swimmers in the boys’ 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle at the Middle Atlantic Silver Championship meet held Saturday and Sunday at Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, New Jersey.

The meet was hosted by the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club and held under the sanction of Middle Atlantic and USA Swimming.

The son of Gary Bair II, Auburn, and Pam and Jerry Hopstetter, Orwigsburg, Matheson was clocked in a personal-best time of 31.40 seconds.

Bair met the qualifying times for the meet in the boys’ 9-10-year-old 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 50 breaststroke events at two previous Middle Atlantic-sanctioned meets.

Aside from his USA Swimming independent affiliation, Bair swims for the Blue Mountain Sharks and is coached by Pete Sarnes, Lauren Hricisak and Glen Belmont.
