H.S. BASEBALL: Minersville advances to Rothermel final

MINERSVILLE — Dylan Stephen knocked in three runs on three hits as the Minersville baseball team opened the Russ Rothermel Tournament with a 9-8 comeback, semifinal win over Mount Carmel on Saturday.

Minersville will oppose North Schuylkill, a 16-2 winner over Shenandoah Valley on Saturday, in the championship game.

Mount Carmel will face Shenandoah Valley in the consolation.

The dates and sites of the championship and consolation games have not been announced.

In Saturday’s game, Stephen kicked off the bottom of the seventh with a two-run single to make it an 8-7 game.

Chris Leshko hit into a fielder’s choice to score Collin Hashin and knot it at 8-8, and Dave Pedron got the two-out, walk-off hit to send Stephen home and complete the come-from-behind victory.

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Alek Hummel led the Spartans’ offense with three RBIs on three hits, and Chris Burke went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as North Schuylkill rolled over the Blue Devils in the other semifinal of the Russ Rothermel Tournament.

Ryan Hillbish and Brandon Mueller combined for 10 strikeouts over five innings for the Spartans.

Nick Gurski struck out nine in a losing effort, while Josh Jacavage had two hits for Shenandoah.

ORWIGSBURG — Adam Hull went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three doubles, and he tossed four innings with six strikeouts to pick up the non-league win for the Eagles.

Sean Greenawalt added two RBIs from two hits, and Justin Hammer recorded a double for Blue Mountain, which rode a nine-run fourth inning to victory.

OLEY — Danny Blugis, Ryan Fink and Mike Ulsh each had two hits and two RBIs to lead a balanced Hurricane attack in a non-league win over the Lynx.

Blayne Moyer also had two hits, one a double, for Schuylkill Haven, which got hits from nine batters.

Sebastian Williamson had three hits to lead Oley Valley, adding a run and an RBI.

Ethan Conage picked up the win for Haven.

C.J. Steinhilber struck out six over five innings in a losing effort, and John Rupinski had two doubles, knocking in a run, for North Schuylkill.

LAURELDALE — Pottsville scored two runs in the final two innings, but Muhlenberg escaped a one-out jam in the seventh to beat the Crimson Tide in a non-league game.

Gavin Hinchliffe tripled in the seventh and scored, but after a walk and Darion Jacoby’s single, Muhlenberg was able to gain the final two outs on a strikeout and flyout.

Pottsville pitchers J.J. Spehrley and Connor Hinchliffe limited Muhlenberg to two hits, but the Muhls scored three unearned runs.

The game was scheduled at Pottsville, but was moved because of field conditions.

OLEY — Emma Schweigert finished with four hits and four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Hurricanes the win.

Kassidy Svenson struck out seven over five innings, while Elizabeth Bayliff and Sarah Personette recorded three hits apiece for Schuylkill Haven.

BIRDSBORO — Sara Tobin struck out 13 over 10 innings, but the Tide fell in extras to Daniel Boone on a throwing error to first that sent home the game-winning run.

Katie Deegan knocked in Pottsville’s only run on a bunt single in the fourth. The Blazers tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch.

Bekah Slattery struck out 22 over 10 innings to pick up the win for Daniel Boone.

The game was scheduled at Pottsville, but was moved because of field conditions.

Boys’ Volleyball

Pottsville 3, Easton 0

Senior Matt Trout served three straight aces to close the match as Pottsville defeated Easton, 25-18, 27-25, 25-20, in a non-league match.

Trout finished with five aces, four kills and 16 digs for the Crimson Tide, who broke a six-match losing streak to start the season.

The Crimson Tide (1-6) won their first three-set sweep since a 3-0 win over Kutztown on May 2, 2011.

Tyler Vandermartin had four kills, two blocks and 15 digs for Pottsville while Kory Kleckner added four kills and 14 digs. Fernando Rivera had 12 assists and eight digs.

Daniel Fils-Aime had nine kills for Easton.

Easton won the JV match 25-14, 25-22.
