Marian’s Kaylee Ceci and Brenna Karnish figure to be in the running for individual titles at next Wednesday’s Schuylkill League Track and Field Championships.
The pair teamed up for a pair of victories during Friday’s 45th annual Schuylkill County Relays at Pottsville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Ceci, a senior, and Karnish, a sophomore, combined to win the shot put and discus for the Fillies. The pair finished the shot put with a combined 61 feet, 4.5 inches and had 202-6 in the discus.
“I think Brenna and I had really good teamwork,” Ceci said. “We pushed each other to get first in both events.”
Added Karnish: “I just
think through practice and everything that we’ve been working together really well. We’ve been encouraging each other. I am just very proud of us today.”
Ceci and Karnish were a few of the individual standouts Friday in what is the final tune-up before the league meet. It was two squads, however — Hazleton and Tamaqua — that took home most of the team awards.
Hazleton won both the boys’ and girls’ team Class AAA overall and field championships. The Hazleton boys won three event victories overall and finished with 93 points, getting past Pottsville (82). The Hazleton girls had two event wins and ended with 87 points. Shikellamy, coached by Schuylkill Haven graduate Vicki Davis, had 72.5.
The Blue Raiders won the Class AA girls’ overall and field titles. Tamaqua finished the overall race with 61 points, while Pine Grove (46) came in second.
Tamaqua ended tied with Marian for the Class AA boys’ title with 32 points. The Raiders also took home the boys’ field championship.
Pottsville’s Aysia Centano, Madison Sherakas, Madelyn Tarconish and Sarah Lombel had the only meet record Friday in the girls’ 800 relay. The four ran a 1:48.1, breaking the old mark of 1:48.4.
Ceci and Karnish got their wins in early Friday.
Ceci’s main event is the shot put, in which she finished third at last year’s the league meet behind North Schuylkill’s Carter Green and Blue Mountain’s Carissa Lorimer.
Ceci threw a 31-4.5 on her third attempt Friday, about 15 inches off her season high of 32-7. Karnish ended at 30-0, a distance she also got on her third try.
North Schuylkill (60-10) came in second.
“I could have thrown better, but I was glad Brenna was with me to push me and do my best,” Ceci said. “I am definitely going to work on my technique. That is what needs the most work. I need to work on staying low and get a good push off my legs.”
Karnish was a Class AA state qualifier in the discus as a freshman last year and was third at the league meet in 2014 behind Green and Lorimer.
Karnish threw a 107-10 on her first attempt Friday, with Ceci hitting a 94-8 on her second attempt. Tamaqua (182-11) took second in the event.
“I probably could have thrown further, but overall I was happy,” Karnish said. “I need to work on my technique with the full spin. It is a lot of technicals and I just need to get everything smoothed out.”
The Blue Raiders finished with two event victories.
The first of the evening came in the pole vault as Morgan Boyle and Paige Demetriades finished at 18-6. Boyle got to 9-6 and Demetriades reached 9-0.
Alexis Baddick and Shanna Brinkworth combined to win the long jump in 29-3.5.
Tamaqua also finished with a three runner-up finishes in the 3,200 relay, distance medley (800, 400, 1,200, 1,600) and discus.
On the boys’ side, Jim Thorpe, Blue Mountain and Pottsville each won a pair of events Friday.
For the Olympians, Dylan Bucior, Ben Saxon, Jake Saxon and Johnathan Condly won the 3,200 relay in 8:20.8, while Rayan Green, Jake Saxon, Condly and Bucior ran the distance medley (800, 400, 1,200, 1,600) in 11:02.1.
