LEGION ROUNDUP: A's stay tied for lead after wild day

KUTZTOWN — Sunday was a busy day for Southern Area, but the A’s finished it still tied atop the Central Division standings in the Schuylkill-Berks Legion League.

Southern Area first defeated Oley/Topton 11-4 thanks to Danny Blugis’ grand slam. Troy Moyer finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and Danny Greenawalt also had two RBIs for the A’s.

Southern Area then beat Kutztown 11-3 in the A’s second game of the day, which ended too late for additional details.

Both games were played at Kutztown on what turned into a busy day for the league. Nine games were played in all, with four teams playing two games and Hamburg playing three — and winning all of them.

Southern Area extended its win total to a league-high 12, tied with Hamburg for the Central Division lead.

LAURELDALE — Pete Baddick went 3-for-5 and scored twice and Adam Bates drove in three runs, but the Blue Sox fell to the Patriots in a Schuylkill-Berks Legion League game.

Bates, Casey Rother and Eddie Titus each had two hits for Tamaqua, which had 13 hits but stranded 10 runners on base.

Tyler Wentzel finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored for Oley/Topton, which took over first place in the South Division.

The game was played at Muhlenberg’s Gochnauer Field to accommodate doubleheaders later in the day.

Antoine Galloway tripled, scored two runs and had three RBIs for Muhlenberg.

Valley View loses

twice in 8 innings

HAMBURG — As if playing 14 innings in one day isn’t enough, Valley View took it a little further.

The West Enders lost a pair of Schuylkill-Berks Legion League games in eight innings, 6-5 to Post 625 and 6-1 to Hamburg.

Hunter Herb went 2-for-3 for Valley View against Hamburg, which scored five runs in the top of the eighth.

Ryan Atkinson struck out nine and walked none in the Reds’ win.

Details were not reported from Valley View’s first game against Post 625.

DeAngelo’s White 0

MIDDLEPORT — Schuylkill Valley Maroon punched its ticket to the Schuylkill County Teener League Junior Division quarterfinals with a shutout win over DeAngelo’s White.

Aiden Stanton doubled and scored on Zack Purnitza’s single in the bottom of the fifth to highlight the Schuylkill Valley offense. Matt Cromyak turned a 6-3 double play in the top of the fifth for Maroon.

J.C. Rodrian picked up the win for Schuylkill Valley Maroon, striking out three.

and walking none in two innings.
