McDonald places

2nd at nationals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A Schuylkill Haven girl placed second in her age and weight division at the USA Weightlifting Youth National Championships.

Allison McDonald, 13, took the silver medal in the ages under 13, 53-kilogram division. She posted a snatch total of 45 kilograms and a clean and jerk total of 56 kilograms for the total of 101.

McDonald is a member of Fearless Barbell, which placed second in the female team competition and was coached by Mitchell Stokes and Angela Tobash.

The other members of that team were Taylor Szczecina, 13, of Orwigsburg and Erin McDonald, 17, of Schuylkill Haven.

Szczecina placed eighth in the ages under 13, 44-kilogram class while Erin McDonald took 13th place in the ages 16-17, 63-kilogram class.

Fearless Barbell’s other entrant, Sam Sterns, 12, of Deer Lake, placed sixth in the ages under-13, 35-kilogram class.

Defensive end

commits to PSU

STATE COLLEGE — A defensive end from Lake Forest, Illinois, is the latest football recruit to commit to Penn State.

Daniel Joseph, a 6-foot-4, 250-pounder, will attend Penn State after receiving offers from 18 other NCAA Division I schools,including six in the Big Ten Conference.

Joseph is Penn State’s 15th recruit and second defensive end in the Class of 2016.
