BOYS' SOCCER: Lehighton, Blue Mtn. clinch playoff berths

ORWIGSBURG — The Schuylkill League boys’ soccer playoff picture got a little bit clearer Saturday night, as Lehighton and Blue Mountain locked up berths in Division I with victories.

The Indians downed North Schuylkill 8-1, while the Eagles blanked Pottsville 2-0. Blue Mountain officially clinched its berth when Pine Grove topped Jim Thorpe 2-0.

Still undecided is which team will be the division champion and which one will be the wild card. Lehighton (13-2, 9-1 D-I) leads the division race by one point over Blue Mountain (11-4-1, 8-1-1) with two matches remaining.

In Division II, Nativity (12-3, 8-0 D-II) has wrapped up the Division II championship, while Schuylkill Haven (9-6-1, 6-2) can clinch the division’s second playoff berth with a win in one of its two remaining games.

ORWIGSBURG — Cam Greenawalt scored a pair of goals as the Eagles blanked the Crimson Tide at the Eagles’ Nest.

Greenawalt scored at 9:41 and 65:13 to give the Eagles all the offense they would need. Blue Mountain held Pottsville to just three shots on goal, with keeper Aaron Albertini tossing the shutout.

Patrick Lawler added a goal and three assists for Lehighton, which won its ninth straight Division I game.

Joel Caputo tallied North Schuylkill’s goal.

PINE GROVE — David Snedden and Michael Elo scored second-half goals just under 2 minutes apart as the Cardinals blanked the Olympians in a Division I game.

Snedden broke a scoreless tie with his goal at 55:56 off an assist from goalkeeper Jason Soper. Elo took a feed from Brandon Frantz to make it 2-0 at 57:41.

MILLERSBURG — Tre Engle and Peppe Mini scored second-half goals three minutes apart as the Vikings rallied past the Indians in a non-league match.

Dan Youells’ goal at 7:47 had given Millersburg a 1-0 before Engle tied it at 45:12 off an assist by Mini, and Mini netted the game-winner at 48:03.

Williams Valley’s defense then preserved the lead, with keeper Brent Reinoehl making 13 saves.
