PINE GROVE - Losing five times Saturday at Biglerville's Canner Duals, even with a depleted lineup, didn't sit well with Pine Grove.

So the Cardinals used the time between then and Wednesday night's Schuylkill League Division I dual meet against Pottsville to get things straightened out.

Weighing in a full lineup, Pine Grove roared at the start and sustained its energy until the end to turn back the Crimson Tide 42-20.

"It was a bounce-back from the weekend,'' Pine Grove coach Jack Drey said. "Last weekend after going 0-5, we talked about wrestling as a team and how every kid is important.

"From top to bottom, they wrestled like they were an important match, and they wrestled tough.''

That toughness started at 160 as Josh Phillippy turned a third-period reversal into a 2-1 decision over Brandon Kessock. The victory started a run in which Pine Grove (5-6, 1-0 D-I) won 6-of-7 bouts to jump out to a 33-3 lead.

William Carlin (170), E.J. Herb (195), Guy Zimmerman (220), Ryan Martin (285) and Quentin Wolff (106) followed with pins as the Cardinals built a commanding lead.

Some guys bumped up a weight class or two, including Zimmerman (18-1) and Martin (17-2), a pair putting together big senior seasons.

Pottsville cut the deficit to 33-17 after 10 matches, but Danny Diaz-Walton stopped a three-bout run with a 7-4 decision over Nathan Cromyak at 132. Diaz-Walton (14-5) scored all three takedowns during the bout.

At 138, Pine Grove senior Jared McCabe notched four takedowns in a 10-6 decision over Tyler Deiter.

Senior Ryan Heim (12-4) capped the night with a 3-2 decision over Kody Stencovage (9-6). Heim's takedown with 1:10 left in the third period made the difference in a low-scoring, high-quality bout.

"Over the past couple years we've been talking about having confidence and getting after the big matches and winning the big matches,'' Drey said. "Every chance we get, we try to get them on somebody to prove themselves, and thus far, they've been proving themselves pretty well. So we hope that continues.''

Pottsville (3-4, 0-1) won five bouts, but none were pins. Luke Gardner (13-1) posted a technical fall at 126, and Richie Bentz (12-3) picked up a forfeit at 113. Kolby Kleckner (11-4), Logan Cromyak and Shykir Bethea added decisions for the Crimson Tide.

Kleckner scored a takedown in the third period to edge Jesse Fisher 4-3 at 170, and Bethea notched two third-period takedowns in a 6-3 decision over Ryan Wolfe.

"They're giving effort, so we've just got to keep working and improving,'' Pottsville coach Gary Keener said.
