LEWISBURG - St. Patrick's Day green shirts and green hats couldn't bring the luck of the Irish to the Blue Mountain boys' swim team this weekend.
Seventeen turned out to be the Eagles' unlucky number.
Nathanael Marino placed 17th in the boys' 100-yard breaststroke Saturday at the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
Marino's time of 1:02.09 left him one spot short of reaching the consolation finals, the same fate the Eagles' 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams suffered Friday when they both placed 17th.
"I don't know what happened. That's all I can say," the Blue Mountain junior said of his race Saturday. "We practiced hard; we did everything we were supposed to do.
"I don't know if it was the big crowd, or I just got nervous. That's OK. We'll be back next year."
Millersburg's Cole Davis was the only boys' swimmer to advance out of the morning preliminaries, placing 11th in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.59.
Davis, who captured a bronze medal Friday in the 200 individual medley, was clocked in 4:50.90 in the consolation finals and placed 12th. Davis placed eighth in the 500 freestyle as a sophomore in 2012, and 11th last year.
"Today, I was a little bit disappointed in myself, because I knew it was the last chance to do this 500 as a senior," said Davis, who has narrowed his college choices to Delaware and Gannon. "Last year I made the consolation finals, and I wanted to return to the A finals like I did as a sophomore.
"But, it is what it is. I'm happy I made it back to the finals, because not many people do that. It's a great experience. I'm happy how I ended my senior year."
Davis' Millersburg teammate, Ian Lloyd, capped his high school career by placing 17th in the 100 backstroke in 54.92, while Blue Mountain's Mark Boran took 23rd in the same event in 55.89.
Boran, a freshman competing in an individual event at states for the first time, recorded his best time in the event after being seeded 26th at 56.05.
"That was my best time ever. I felt really good in the water," Boran said. "No one got to my head in that race. It was just great."
Marino was competing in the 100 breaststroke for the third straight year, and had hopes of earning a state medal after winning a District 11 championship and being seeded seventh with a time of 1:00.83.
Last year, Marino finished 11th in the prelims in 1:00.93, then placed 13th in the consolation finals in 1:01.73. He was 26th as a freshman in 1:02.89.
Saturday, Marino got out to a great start in his heat, the fourth of four in the event. He was in a tight battle for second after 50 yards, and was still among the lead group heading into his final turn.
Things fell apart after that, as Marino finished fifth in his heat and missed the consolation finals by a tenth of a second.
"I think it caught up to me," Marino said. "I didn't think it would, thought I was ready for it."
